Welcome to a new science class, today we will learn how our delicious vegetables and fruits are produced, as well as where do these products come from and what they need to grow. With these clues I am almost sure you know what is our class about. The class for today is……Agriculture.
Agriculture refers to the activities that transform the environment for the production of animals and plants for human use. Agriculture concerns techniques, including the application of agronomic research. Agronomy is research and development related to studying and improving agriculture.
In this class we will focus on the part of agriculture related to the production of plants. As you know the plants grow in the soil, which is the top layer of earth surface. Plants get nutrients, minerals and absorb water through their roots in the soil. The question is….. What type of soil is the best for it? Definitely the best type of soil is the Loamy soil that consists of almost equal amounts of sand, silt and clay--ideal for gardening. This mixture of particles creates a soil that absorbs and retains moisture but which also drains well, allowing air to reach the roots of the plants. Loamy soil is loose; when squeezed, it can be formed into a ball that crumbles easily.
Do you think in our beautiful Ecuador we have this type of soil?..........well, to answer this question you must think if our country produces different kinds of fruits and vegetables, ,,,,,,,,,,, so,,,,,, is Ecuador an agricultural country?.......of course it is……..that´s why we can enjoy all these delicious products at a reasonable price, because we produce them.
But,,,,,, can plants grow at any region of our country? Do farmers cultivate the same crops either in the highlands or in the coast?...........of course not . Most of fruits and vegetables have specific needs so they can grow healthy. What you must be wondering now is…….are agricultural products the same in all our country?.........the answer is,,,no. You know Ecuador is divided in 4 natural regions: coast, highlands, amazon and insular region. As they provide 4 different kinds of weather conditions, different products can grow there, for example the banana is a tropical crop so it will grow in the coast. The potato is a crop which needs a cool weather, so it will grow in the highlands.
Here there is a list of crops that grow in the different regions In the coast we can find: banana, corn, rice, orange, watermelon, coffee, etc In the highlands we cultivate: potato, apple, pear, peach, onions, grapes, etc here we also produce beautiful flowers which are exported all around the world. The amazon region produces hard wood trees, which are excellent for furniture industry. And in the insular region even though they lack fresh water, coffee, tomatoes and cucumbers are grown.
As you see the agriculture in Ecuador is so important because it provides healthy food, and is one of the most important economic activities. Not only in Ecuador but also all around the world.
So if you want to become a farmer and save some money, you can do it……..start planting some vegetables or fruit seeds in your garden. You can start, depending on the space, with carrots, onions, Peas, peppers. Spinach, Tomatoes, or even Zucchini . These are easy cultivating crops. Make sure that whatever you are planting is right for that particular time of year.
Now lets remember what we learned today. 1.-What is agriculture? Agriculture or also called farming refers to the activities that transform the environment for the production of animals and plants for human use. 2.-What type of soil is the best for agriculture? The best type of soil is the Loamy soil that consists of almost equal amounts of sand, silt and clay-
3.- Is our country an agricultural country? Of course because it has an excellent soil, and great weather conditions for agriculture. 4.-Which of the following crops belong to the highlands? Banana Potato Orange If your answer was potato, you are right, orange and banana could not grow at the high altitudes and low temperatures of the highlands.
Well, now you are ready to have your own plantation and become a farmer. Good luck¡¡¡
