Pyramid of nutrition
2. Did you know?
Healthy eating is associated with reduced risk for
many diseases, including several of the leading
causes of death: heart disease, cancer, stroke,
and diabetes.
Healthy eating in childhood and adolescence is
important for proper growth and development and
can prevent health problems such as obesity,
dental caries, iron deficiency, and osteoporosis.
Food provides the energy and nutrients you need
to be healthy. Nutrients include proteins ,
carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water.
3. Are you eating healthy?
Learning to eat nutritiously is not hard. The key is to
Eat a variety of foods, including vegetables, fruits and
whole-grain products
Eat lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and low-fat dairy
products
Drink lots of water
Go easy on the salt , sugar, alcohol, saturated fat and
trans fat
Remember: saturated fats are usually fats
that come from animals.
Look for trans fat on the labels of
processed foods, margarines and
shortenings.
4. Getting schools involved
Schools are in a unique position to promote
healthy eating and help ensure appropriate
food and nutrient intake among students.
Schools provide students with opportunities
to consume an array of foods and beverages
throughout the school day and enable
students to learn about and practice healthy
eating behaviors.
Schools should ensure that only nutritious
and appealing foods and beverages are
provided in school cafeterias, vending
machines, snack bars, school stores, and
other venues that offer food and beverages to
students. In addition, nutrition education
should be part of a comprehensive school
health education curriculum.

7. Why should we have PE in
schools?
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
recommends that young people aged 6–17 years participate in at
least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.
Overweight and obesity, which are influenced by physical
inactivity and poor diet, can increase one’s risk for diabetes, high
blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, arthritis, and poor
health status. Physical inactivity increases one’s risk for dying
prematurely.
Schools can promote physical activity through comprehensive
school physical activity programs, including recess, classroom-
based physical activity, intramural physical activity clubs,
interscholastic sports, and physical education.
Schools can ensure that physical education is provided to all
students in all grades and is taught by qualified teachers.
Schools can also work with community organizations to provide
out-of-school-time physical activity programs and share physical
activity facilities.
