Aboriginal people experience significantly poorer health outcomes than non-Indigenous Australians. Life expectancy is 15-20 years lower and Aboriginal people are twice as likely to die from cardiovascular disease and have much higher rates of chronic respiratory disease, rheumatic heart disease, and diabetes. While Aboriginal people represent 1.1% of the population in the region, they are underrepresented in mainstream health services and tend to seek help later when illnesses are more advanced. The document outlines the Aboriginal health structure and plans to develop comprehensive, culturally appropriate, and seamless services across the region through partnerships between mainstream and Aboriginal community controlled organizations.
