                   Distracted Driving

What is distracted driving?

There are four types of driver distraction:

Visual ‟ looking at something other than the road

Auditory ‟ hearing something not related to
driving

Manual ‟ manipulating something other than the
wheel

Cognitive ‟ thinking abut something other than
driving Seabees We build – We fight

              Distracted Driving

Most distractions involve more than
one of these types, with both a sensory ‟
eyes, ears, or touch ‟ and a mental component.

Distraction occurs when a driver voluntarily
diverts attention to
something not related
to driving that uses the driver’s eyes, ears, or
hands.

              Distracted Driving

How often are drivers distracted?

Driver distraction is common in everyday
driving and in crashes.

Drivers on the road: A study that observed 100
drivers continually for a full year found that
drivers were distracted between 1/4 and 1/2 of
the time.

„ About 2/3 of all drivers use a cell phone
while driving.

„ About 1/3 used a cell phone routinely.
During daylight hours in 2009, between 7% and
10% of all drivers were using a cell phone.

„ Texting: In recent surveys, about 1/8 of all
drivers reported texting while driving. During
daylight hours in 2009, fewer than 1% of all
drivers were observed to be texting.

Out of the 16 Motorcyclists killed in FY11, 12 were riding
sport bikes, 9 had not completed MSRC
This is a reduction in sport bike fatalities from 29 in
FY08 to 12 this last year

and other destructive decisions while maintaining good order
and discipline. To assist sailors in making life decisions that
will maintain positive lifestyles in keeping with the Navy’s
core values. To guide sailors away from making poor and
destructive decisions by providing them with positive and
dynamic training and to show sailors how to make quick
positive decisions and put their training to use in moments of

  1. We’re coming to the end of your Warrior Transition Seminar. Here’s what we have done during the last hour or so:  By asking you to share your stories from the recent past, what you are feeling now, and what your plans are for the future, we: Started you thinking about some issues that might be a concern later, such as experiences you may have of eliminating the enemy, or seeing innocent people die at the hands of their own oppressive regime. Telling your story to your fellow Seabee is a therapy it gets you talking and getting out your feelings rather than holding them in. Modeled a way to share your story. This is something you need to be doing with your fellow Seabees. Take some of the things you have started sharing here, and continue to talk those issues through. Gather with your comrades in your unit, like many Seabees are already doing. Talk to a trusted friend. Share concerns with your chaplain. We spent some time telling our stories. We talked about where you’ve been, where you are, and where you want to go. And we’ve slipped in some survival training along the way. The fact is that coming home from a hostile environment doesn’t happen all at once. And working here on the things that happened there may take a long, long time. This program is just one step along the way. We hope it’s been a helpful step. Please know that your chaplain stands ready to help you take the steps you want to take, to the future you wantto find, whenever you’re ready. Here are some resources, people you can turn to for support on base, such as the Single Sailor Program, The Fleet & Family Support Center, your Chaplain or LCPOs, MWR, Navy Medicine, etc.  If you have any questions, please see one of the chaplains or LCPO’s here today, or your unit chaplain or LCPO.
