18. Crowdsourcing" has, virtually overnight, generated huge buzz, enthusiasm, and fear. It's the application of the open-source idea to any field outside of software, taking a function performed by people in an organization, such as reporting done by journalists, research and product development by scientists, or design of a T-shirt, for example, and, in effect, "outsourcing" it through an open-air broadcast on the Internet. Crowdsourcing has already had a huge impact on big companies like Procter & Gamble, as well as start-ups like Threadless.com, which rapidly became the third largest T-shirt maker in the United States. The fuel sparking the crowdsourcing flame is the potent combination of more highly educated people working in fields other than those in which they were trained with the greatest mechanism for distributing knowledge and information the world has ever seen: the Internet.

Yesterday To ensure we have a great, informative, website for our customers This was still all in our hands, how much manhours we wanted to give to promote our website How much time we wanted to spend to get the best website possible How much money we were willing to pay google for their pay by click offering But this all changed, almost over night, the YOU web rised, the web were everybody can participate and become part of it. As so many times it started not with business Show www.flickr.com www.youtube.com www.wikipedia.org What was special Inclusion of the crowd Free sharing (knowledge. Vdo‘s even something so intimate as weddings) 08/02/09
And today 2 years later... We have Web2.0 everywhere All with similar feature that change totally the way we choose our products, how we look at ads and how we even do business Now what has this all to do with your own business, your own hotel and the way on how you can get or loose your customers? 08/02/09

Ok it worked for knowledge, but would it work for business It always starts in entertainment, in games, information and communication Then moves on to business and becomes mainstream Then the media are discussing it and then finally Even schools (at least the few good ones out there) start to realize ist potential and applying it to their class curricullum
www.wikipedia.com Check for „public sector“ Click on the history tab to see who and when happend changes Make sure you understand Wiki is a technology, a way of collaborating on the web Wikipedia is a product USING this technology, ist as well the inventor and the most successful wiki so far We will as well use wiki technology for one of our projects
It started as so many times with some 16 / 17 year old NET GEN people Not accepting or perhaps just not knowing on how it has been done the last 100 years and how it should never have changed (as they might have been told in class) They just wanted to make money, but all they had was an idea and some technical skills to build a simple website Today they are multiple millionaires, just some 3 years later

But before going into the details on how to do this or why doing it, lets see some of the key latest figures on world usage of internet and specifically social networks Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
Why do active internet users matter? Social media is driven by active internet users, if you don’t use the internet regularly you a re unlikely to sign up for tools such as blogging or set up a social network profile. Active internet users drive adoption of platforms and tools; they will determine which tools and platforms become dominant in the social media space. They are the best proxy for the future, over time all internet users will increase their usage and eventually everyone will become an active users, just as consumers made the transition from occasional to regular TV watching in the 1950s and 1960s. Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
India records steady progress across the board with rising use of all social media platforms. Total penetration remains low, but among active Internet Users statistics are going in the right direction. More Indians are managing social network profiles at 78%, visiting friends’ social network pages (82%) and uploading photos – (77%). There are slight increases in the number watching videos and reading blogs up from 72.4% to 73.0% and 62.2% to 63.1% in the last six months, respectively. Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
LinkedIn is a Social Networking site for professionals. When you get back to the office tomorrow, go to LinkedIn and search for your educational institutes name. You might be surprised to see who and how many people have a profile on there. It surprised me to see that it has a high management and above membership base, means you top people, top alumni are there It almost feels like a secret club of sorts.
But not only social networks to link to others like you, there are many other sharing web2 enabled applications out there. One my all time favorites is slideshare
This one on managemen of change has been 28‘000 times viewed The current slides i present just now to you are on slideshare since 4 days and have already resulted in 90 views
There’s a big difference there, and I wonder how many of us the same applies to? Look at what you were using even last year compared to this year and you will see how fast both the web2.0 and enterprise2.0 landscape is moving.
Specially the possibilities enabled through the iphone is just incredible Actually we at IMI are so very much convinced about the added value of the iphone that we plan to get to each and every student in 2010 at imi a free iphone but not only this we will give one to each and every staff and faculty and we will make use of it in our daily campus life, we actually already now together with my class develop a cityguide for the iphone
That really speaks for itself, in that it’s almost mandatory for software to be web based to be classed as web2.0 or enterprise2.0. The fact that Internet Explorer is giving way to FireFox/ Chrome is interesting. Here you have an open source, slick, secure, ahead of the pack piece of software taking a big piece of Microsoft’s pie. It’s a sign of things to come. How many Microsoft apps do you see above?
If you look at this diagramm of what web2 stands for i think you may agree that it somehow shows as well a lot on what i important to us as educators and what we want to prepare our students for An education build on trust Rich user experiences Playful education The right to remix (means the right to take something existing and make it to something new unique As you name it in your todays conference – next slide Using the internet an attitude and not just new technology Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com

Singapores objective for 2009 is how singapore calls its main objective for their educational reform Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
Why would we need such a reform? What has changed? A new world is out there But so what changed? 1 we work in a global much more competitive market, every single resource becomes more important, countries who did not play a mayor role in world economy suddently are big players 2 during the industrial revolution it was considered clearly to have a management (brain) and the workers (from whom was just expected to do the job) But nowadays the brain is everybody in the company. Ideas are suggested from just everybody from maintenance personal to the top management. This coined the expression of knowledge workers, but we have far past the knowledge management level 1 and with new technologies available to more and more eager and active users we truly can apply knowledge management – one of the killer applications of the age of web2 wikipedia shows it all too good 3 where as before our first workplace was most possibly as well our last, the chance that we could keep our knowledge within the company was pretty good Where our fathers might have started to work with IBM and will possibly go in their pension when leaving IBM What about your students? How many jobs will they have gone through when they touch their 35th birthday 4 technology supports the storage of even most difficult knowlegde through different medias like video, databases, podcasts, intra and extranets, google/ wikipedia brings the worlds combined knowledge to your fingertip. But only since we understand to use the internet the web2 way, we really started to understand the wisdom of the crowd, the importance of inclusion of everybody, the strengths of social networks and the feeling of belonging we can finally define new ways which touch not only our private and business life but more and more find the way into our classrooms Actually MUST find their way in our classrooms since else we do not prepare our students for the real world out their and will loose our competitive edge
What is in need in the jobmarket So what should we teach our students to be?
So how would such a new professor 2.0, or professor upgrade look like See a diagram on how we all used to work Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com

Educators understood the value of collaboration, and so the Professional Learning Community arose Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
But technology has changed that world. The 21st Century educator now operates under this model. ( Alec Couros of Open Thinking blog created this graphic The person is the portal to the network. The person is an autonomous communication and collaboration node. As sociologist Barry Wellman said, “Each person operates his networks to obtain information, collaboration, orders, support, sociability, and a sense of belonging” Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
Educators2.0 will fluidly move between the physical and virtual networks to communicate, collaborate, and share ideas, data, strategies, and information. Each member being a portal or node to their individual network makes the collaborative exponentially stronger, knowledgeable, and wise. Professional Networked Learning Collaborations are able to maximize individual members’ networks to the advantage of the whole. Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
And dont forget effective networks as i see them are Decentralized Distributed Dynamic Democratic I know some of you may feel rather unconfortable with this idea but its already there and working well
Presentation Title 23 What does that mean for the real every day class or project work? For example, if a team was discussing the needs of a student with special needs, they could network in specialists from the district office or the county office, or a college professor in another state. If a team was analyzing data, they could collaborate virtually with data specialists who could offer their unique expertise virtually. Networks have now become so much a part of our lives that physical presence is no longer necessary for a member to “present.” Howard Rheingold calls this “presence of those who are absent.” PNLCs can call on a district specialist, consultants, teachers, and staff who are in different physical locations (even different time zones) and who will be able to collaborate, contribute, cooperate, and share just as if they were present physically. As I said since I started to involve my students into the marketing of our school, they not only become subworkers but become members, motivated stakeholders, knowledge workers
What makes them so different, before i explained why web2 does have an influence on how we live, work and how education could and should become I suggested some of the competencies and ways a lecturer must adjust to teach the web2 way But lets look at the center of all, lets look at the students how did they become different from before, what are their ways of doing and not doing things
Who is the so called Net Gen It is everybody born after 1990 Means they are between 0 to 29 years old and make 13% of people (students and workforce)
In Germany , Knigge is best remembered for his book Über den Umgang mit Menschen ( On Human Relations ), a treatise on the fundamental principles of human relations that has the reputation of being the authoritative guide to behaviour, politeness, and etiquette. The work is in fact more of a sociological and philosophical treatise on the basis of human relations than a how-to guide on etiquette. Nevertheless, the German term “Knigge” has come to mean “good manners”. Freiherr Adolph Franz Friedrich Ludwig Knigge ( 16 October 1752 – 6 May 1796 ) was a German writer Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com

Sounds as if there is not much hope And sounds as if there are more questions than answers, but i would still say Yes there is hope, actually a lot of hope for better education and better students Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
Lets see at one of NetGen‘s success stories Mr facebook is a product of NetGen and all the makers of those others many 1000 web2 ideas out there in the internet are as well brainchilds of NetGen students There has never been such a huge amount of young successful entrepreneurs out there than right now What are the talents which they bring along, what are their Unique Points UP‘s? Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
They really know how to work in teams how to profit from each others They can even profit from working in chaotic kind of unorganized networks
They moved from being consumers to active prosumers The indivual takes an active role and gets more involved into the process Web forums gain more and more of importance to answer questions or discuss issues The specialists are often the netgen students themselves, I guess the development of the mountain bike is a good example of such a new competencies of netgen students. It has been created from freaks for freaks through such forums and discussions and loose networks mainly in the california area of the usa Prosumer is a portmanteau formed by contracting either the word pro fessional or pro ducer with the word con sumer . The term has taken on multiple conflicting meanings: the business sector sees the prosumer (professional–consumer) as a market segment , whereas economists see the prosumer (producer–consumer) as having greater independence from the mainstream economy . It can also be thought of as converse to the consumer with a passive role, denoting an active role as the individual gets more involved in the process. More recently, in the mental health field, the word "'prosumer'" has come to mean "consumer/provider," also known as a "peer provider," such as a Peer support specialist or other mental health consumer who also provides peer support mental health services ( background on peer-run mental health services ).
Some call it the end of control, they try to fight facebook and rate my computer only to achieve that students even more use it But if you look at the important role of twitter and webblogs of netgen‘s in iran and how they managed to influence public opinion and how all together citizen journalism is on the rise we can only guess the future implication of such DO IT – end of control applications and trends
Netgen‘s will not accepet being a somebody, they want the individual treatment They know it is technically prossible and will demand it more and more Only teaching seems still not understand this The same looking classrooms all over the world The same class schedules The same way and means of teaching A school 2 should be customized to a certain extend so that the students can choose their own pathway of learning Instead of showing them or even forcing them on a strict way of how to do things, education upgrade should show them ways to achieve and should then let loose and have them find their own ways
Net gens will be carefully where they work, too much are they aware of the wallmarts, the nestles out there and with a star like google they know about ways on how to be non evil and still successful Green is the new selling point and its not only the environment its as well on how staff is treated and how everybody finally is a contributor to the corporate knowledge of a organization, a knowledge worker 2.0
Finally even the most traditional teachers or managers can accept that there is high performance in a fun environment Work and learning actually can be fun, entertaining, creative, multimedial even a bit chaotic
Net 2 are the true collaborator, where we started slow but sure to learn and use email, skype and wikis Our netgen students have embeded them, have become part of many such networks and live them on a daily basis
http://twittervision.com/maps/show_3d And they are fast, very fast – twitter the latest of new web killer applications is all that
A typical netgen killer Would guess there are not many in this room which are twitters (asking the audience)? Leaders in Education, lor July 2009 l.ritzel@imi-luzern.com
.. And as i started the UP‘s of netgen, they are innovators, within the possibilities of web2, open source, their capacity of multitasking and doing things fast, there urge to belong to something/ somewhere, to be inlcuded and their no fear from DOING things without being asked by the adult world makes them the perfect INNOVATORS
So what can i give you as a final message Forbid facebook What a wrong message What a missed out opportunity
