- In the web browser Safari, you know when there is an RSS feed or not because of the blue RSS square in the upper right hand corner. If you click on that, you are able to subscribe or get a preview of the RSS feed coming from that page.
- RSS feeds allow you to see headlines and summaries of articles on that page so you can at a glance be able to see what’s new. Safari is great for accessing text based RSS feeds. If you want to be able to subscribe to RSS feed with audio or video associated with it, you can subscribe to that inside of iTunes.
- The iTunes Store has a built in podcast directory (including a K-12 category) that offers over 100,000 podcasts from people creating audio and video RSS feeds that you can subscribe to in your own iTunes Library. For example, NPR podcasts the story of the day, so if you wanted to receive the story of the day, every single day, you just hit the subscribe button and automatically iTunes would keep an eye on that feed and everytime a new article is added to it you automatically receive it in your iTunes and you can sync it to your ipod.
- Inside of your iTunes Library is a folder just for podcasts. This is where your podcasts are stored until you are ready to either listen to them on your computer or sync them with your iPod for access on the go.
- An enhanced feature that was added to podcasting in June of 2005 is an enhanced audio file format. With this file format, you can actually create “chapters” inside of a longer audio piece. There are corresponding images that go along with the audio. It provides a great visual reinforcement to the audio content, but it allows for navigating easier through a podcast. This is a great way to create a learning tool that provides textual, visual, and audio support for the content that your students are listening to.
- Now that you’ve had a chance to explore podcasts potentially for your professional development and/or your student’s access, now let’s take a look at other ways in which podcasts are being created. Share resources from Google. Podcast examples.
- So when you look at creating a podcast, it’s really three easy steps. First of all you can author or create a project. All the programs needed to do this come built right in on a Mac and work together easily. This evening you’ll be working with Garageband, iPhoto, iTunes, iWeb, which make up the ILife Suite. So when you are finished, you can upload your file to either Mobile Me, Mac Server, or ftp to the State K-12 network server. And then students, teachers, faculty, parents, and community members who may want to access that content can download through iTunes, sync to an iPod and have access on the go!
- Now that you have the big idea, let’s look at the nuts and bolts and how to create a professional looking podcast with an instructional purpose. I’m first going to ask for you attention a few more minutes so I can walk you through the technical features of Garage band and how quick and easy it is to pull together a podcast. Then you’ll be given the rest of this evening to experience hands-on creating your own podcast.
