This document discusses bringing library services to online-only classes at Lincoln Memorial University. It outlines standards from the Association of College and Research Libraries and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business that the library aims to meet. The library creates access to all services, provides training and support, and uses technology innovatively and creatively. Services offered through the MBA online Blackboard shell include orientations, tutorials, access to the library website, catalog and databases, interlibrary loan, live chat, office hours on Google Hangouts and Skype, and social media. Student feedback is gathered through surveys.
3. Standards
• Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Guidelines
for Distance Learning Services
• ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher
Education
• Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
4. Standards:
1. Create Access to all library services
2. Provide proper training and support
3. Be innovative and creative in use of technology
Introduce myself.
Liaison to Business Department
Systems librarian but have an MBA
Today in presentation I will talk about the efforts of LMU to offer online business coursework
Along with tools that I have used to incorporate library services in the online environment
FTE a little under 4000
Masters programs in Business, Science, Nursing
Doctoral programs in Medicine and Veterinary Science
MBA program graduated around 60 students last spring
Offering 8 courses online. Hybrid with in person courses too
Campuses in Harrogate and Cedar Bluff, Knoxville
In the future – online-only program
To be the model for other online-only programs offered at university
ACRL guidelines for distance learning – states that distance programs should offer the same services to online students as those in person physically
ACRL information literacy – talk to phil
AACSB – offers similar standards for distance learning as ACRL emphasizing that employers expect business students to have good research skills. Library resources play a large role in this. Librarians and faculty should develop relationships with students even if they are attending virtually
What I got from studying the standards
The challenge is to provide the same access to library services that students receive when they physically enter a library building.
Also create ways to help online students with using the resources whether through training or providing reference support
Use the technology that is out there. Be inventive and innovative.
School of Business:
To prepare leaders who are able to meet and exceed the challenges of today’s integrated world economy, who can balance ethics and social responsibility with the creation of profits and wealth for the betterment of society.
Library:
In keeping with Lincoln Memorial University’s mission, the Carnegie-Vincent Library’s mission is to provide the services, collections, staff and facilities to meet the information and research needs of the faculty, staff, and students; to provide a setting conducive to research and study, and to provide library patrons the opportunity to develop the research skills necessary for information literacy.
The library instruction in each tutorial. Elaborate.
Mention the creation of quizes and how that will fit into both the blackboard shell and the orientation module

Why I used Camtasia – ease of use, SCORM for Blackboard, easy upload to Youtube
Screencast-o-matic – nice free option. Free for one year. Does place logo at bottom of page unless you buy full version. Not quite as in dept as camtasia but a good alternative with nice voice over options
Other option is to create videos with hands on activities for students. Two viable options: Captivate and Wink.
Explain why I started with the blackboard shell and that the orientation is something that will be created later.
Talk about the Carnegie Vincent Library search box, how it’s created. The changes to it for MBA. Like the addition of Hoover’s and the more specific databases by subject, business link…and a link to the subject guide.
Demonstrate how to create an ebsco search box and that most vendors provide ways for you to do this. Just google them.
Click on the link and go to the search box creation page and demonstrate.
An opportunity to add reference opportunities for online learners. The code can be embedded or added as a link to open in a new window.
Not really any free options anymore. Explain PureChat – how it is free for a time but then we’re going down to only one simultaneous user which will create problems. We are considering using Springshare’s LibChat…but we think PureChat is more user friendly.
Another reference opportunity.
Online office hours.
Hold them once or twice the first semester.
Advertise them on the Blackboard shell and using social media
If no one comes, that’s okay. Providing avenues for services is part of it.
Two free options. Google Hangouts and Skype. Whichever you prefer in my opinion. Both are easy to use.
Social media is being used by all of the students
Good to make it available for the MBA students to see and use.
Advertise the Facebook and Twitter pages
*Allow students to reach you in a variety of ways that they feel comfortable with
Other ideas’.
More in class instruction instead of just focusing on the blackboard shell and orientation shell
Provide tutorials that are more hands on.
I’d like to try some other technologies that are free on the Internet
Animoto lets you create vidos
PowTown lets you create animated videos
Voki lets you create a speaking character who narrates for you.
Would be a cool way to do short tutorials on databases or present news items to the students
Does anyone have any interesting technology options they would like to add?
Assessment is really important. I’ve got to know what is successful and what needs improvement or changing
I will create some surveys to offer after the orientation module is completed
Also either mid-semester and at the end of the semester
Would like to look at student retention and results of exit exams
It’s exciting to have the opportunity to include library services as a program is really just beginning
I’m trying to offer as much as possible and create as many avenues as possible
Students each learn differently so it’s important to provide many ways to access and use library services
Program is “up in the air” literally and figuratively
I see this as an opportunity to get in at the earliest possible moment
Anything I create now can be adapted for the online-only program
