Research Article #3
Simulated vs. Hands-On Lab Experiments
New model is likely to require more actual lab work for those taking Advanced
Placement courses online.
By Michelle R. Davis
This article originally appeared as an e-article and was subsequently published in
Education Week.
The article takes up the debate that digital labs can provide the same level of learning as
actually picking up equipment and doing the experiment or dissection.
“Simulated labs can be highly effective learning tools; however, even the best
simulations are not automatically successful. They are tools that can enhance a well-
designed curriculum and the efforts of a good teacher, but they cannot replace them. They
must still be part of an overall instructional design and rely on the timely guidance of a
teacher.”
The article is mostly opinion based with little research support. However, detailed
descriptions on best practices for use are outlined with further research references cited.
In addition to detailed documentation the discussion thread posts several references to
specific on-line lab sites.
This article acknowledges that on-line simulations and virtual labs are improving yearly.
The article recommends incorporating virtual labs and simulations as enhancements to a
curriculum rather than as complete replacements.
