This brief introduction to language and culture in intercultural communication was given to USC Marshal School graduate students in the Business Analytics program. The speakers included ALI faculty Jim Valentine, Nina Kang, and Eric H. Roth, Marshal School career strategist Lily Salem, and ALI student program staff Shelly Snellman. The workshop covered many aspects of intercultural communication, heard student stories, and reviewed some reasons for miscommunication. It felt like a strong start to a new academic year.

This paper outlines a workshop which I conducted in Tokyo and Osaka in 2013 as part of an INSET program accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Sports, Education and Culture (MEXT). The course, entitled Using and Adapting Authentic Materials to Help Motivate Students, aims to give teachers a better understanding of the concept of authenticity as it realigns itself with the way English is used and taught around the world for international communication. My aims as the teacher/researcher were to understand more about how L2 teachers of English perceive the notion of authenticity and how this concept could be broadened to try and empower L2 users of English by helping them to start reconceptualising authenticity from a more international perspective. This paper first looks at some of the issues that arise when attempting to define authenticity and then, building on the distinctions laid out by Widdowson (1978), that authenticity is not something absolute but relative to learners, I suggest that authenticity might be best viewed as a continuum which incorporates international voices and moves away from culturally embedded definitions. With that in place I will describe the contents of the workshop, followed by an explanation of the data I collected as part of the workshop and how analysis showed that participants reported the notion of an authenticity continuum to be empowering and even increased their motivation to try and make their own classes more authentic.

The aims of this study was to determine the effect of teaching methods and locus of control on students' ability to speak in English. This study used an experimental method with 2 x 2 factorial design involving 44 students of class IX SMA 01 Cibinong Bogor, West Java. In determining the sample, the researchers used a technique multi-stage cluster random sampling, ie 22 students as the experimental group were treated by using the Direct Method and 22 students as a control group treated with the use of Grammar Translation Method (GTM). For collecting data, researchers used to test the ability to speak and questionnaire variables for variable locus of control were further analyzed using ANOVA Two Paths and followed by Tuckey test. The findings show that: (1) The ability to speak the students taught by using the Direct Method is higher than those taught using grammar translation method (GTM); (2) Students with internal locus of control has the ability to speak better than those who an external locus of control; (3) Students with internal locus of control are taught using the Direct Method has a significant difference in the ability to speak with those who taught Grammar translation is by using Method (GTM); (4) Students are taught with external locus of control by using the direct method is no different with them yag taught using translation Grammar Method (GTM); (5) There is an interaction between teaching methods and locus of control on their speaking ability
