                     Technology Enhanced Learning Symposium
                     De Montfort University
                     5thMay 2010
A portfolio is…

Design a poster to illustrate a portfolio…
What is the purpose of the portfolio?
 What elements does it contain?
 What might it look like?
Experience with ePortfolios
                                        ?
Discuss the experience you have with
 electronic portfolios…
 What tools have you used?
 What tools could be used?

Is there a wealth of experience in the room?
  Yes / No
An ePortfolio is…
Discuss the electronic / online tools that could
be used to replace the elements of your
 paper-based portfolios…
Draw a diagram to represent this mapping

How can you ensure the electronic tools you
 use support your pedagogic approaches?
An ePortfolio is…
…about the connections that are made and
how those connections can be presented

Reflective statements can be used to pull
portfolio elements together (using a blog?)

An evidence mapping diagram or table can
 also be useful

  1. This presentation has been prepared for participants of the De Montfort University Technology Enhanced Learning Symposium. This presentation will be used to structure the workshop session on ePortfolios.Slide Icon Key: Writing Hand = (paper-based) group activity – can’t beat old tech’ ;o)? = the session will adapt to the participants in the room and their prior experience with ePortfolios.Document Page = Informative slides, Examples, references and resources.
  2. Activity to discover what participants think a portfolio is: different purposes of portfolios, what different portfolios might look like, the different elements portfolios might contain.
  3. Activity to determine how much experience workshop participants have of using ePortfolios.
  4. Thinking about elements of a portfolio (results of task on slide 2) and investigating different electronic or online tools that could be used. It’s important to remember what the purpose of the portfolio is, which will also inform the tools used to build the portfolio. The pedagogy doesn’t need to change (although that might be one motivation for using electronic portfolios).
  5. For me,and for my students it’s about making connections. This doesn’t seem to get a mention very often in the literature.Need methods for representation of those connections. Hyperlinking is one method or use of an academic reference system – but if the portfolio is large and contains the use of many tools and / or artifacts, then a summary or evidence mapping table can be useful.
  6. Use the wiki a bit like a website, where they post different aspects of their work. The wiki is viewable by everyone enrolled on the module. Each element has a separate deadline although they can update any of the elements before the final (evaluation) deadline. Can track the work’s progress and see how it changes and develops based on feedback.Provides the opportunity to develop, learn from others, adapt, make mistakes…
  7. Wiki pages (public to all on module) / Blog posts (private: student to tutor) used to post their own worke.g. proposal, research, design, prototypes, product, evaluation and links to references Prompted to add work during lectures and labs and directed self-study tasks, but they choose what and when. Can get “messy” but doesn’t matter to me.Summary report – to demonstrate understanding of topics by supporting their own work using references and linking all the elements togetherReport drafted in 3 versions, can and are encouraged to update any aspect of the work through feedbackThe connections / linking is key. Most feedback relates to the way they can improve the connections between their own and others work.Others – don’t expect students to use anything but Blog or Wiki within Blackboard, but the following web-based tools did get used for this module.Facebook group set up by students to share info. – “Better than Blackboard”!Delicious – at least one student used this to store / share references and links – I use it too and there is a link to my delicious / diigo from within Bb.Twitter – mostly used by me using #tech2015 hashtag, a bit randomly, but a couple of students on module follow me, no students used hashtag. Have now set up twapperkeeper to save all #tech2015 tweets.
  8. Example Mapping Table that would work for students on my TECH2015 module.
  9. Example Mapping Table that would work for students on my TECH2015 module. As they submit electronically, they could hyperlink their evidence in the table to make their connections more obvious.
  10. If a large proportion of the workshop participants have experience of using ePortfolios we can share some information about our practice. What are the benefits and challenges? Otherwise, perhaps this activity can be used for further investigation by the participants after the event, or a follow-up event?
  11. Some recent interesting Blog Posts.Barrett’s links and resources site.
  12. JISC resources. The Virtual Goodie Bag from the recent JISC Conference is very useful.
