Basketball Bear
Finished Size: Clothing fits 12" teddy bear
MATERIALS
Worsted Weight Yarn [3½ ounces (198 yards) per skein (Bronze)
or 3 ounces (170 yards) per skein (all other colors)]:
Green - 1 skein
White - 1 skein
Black - 1 skein
Bronze - 1 skein
Crochet hook, size G (4.00 mm) or size needed for gauge
Yarn needle
Teddy bear - 12" tall
Hook and loop fastener (for Basketball)
Polyester fiberfill
Sewing needle and thread
Green felt
Glue
GAUGE
8 sc and 8 rows = 2"
Note: Do not join at end of each round unless instructed. Using
a scrap piece of yarn, place marker at beginning of each round,
moving marker after each round is complete.
SHORTS
With Green, ch 50 loosely; being careful not to twist ch, join with
slip st to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (Right side): Ch 1, sc in each ch around; do not join, place
marker: 50 sc.
Note: Mark last round as right side.
Rnds 2-15: Sc in each sc around; do not finish off.
RIGHT LEG
Rnd 1 (Dividing rnd): Sc in next sc, place marker around sc just
made for st placement, sc in next 24 sc, leave remaining 25 sc
unworked (Left Leg): 25 sc.
Rnd 2: Sc in marked sc and in each sc around.
Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around; slip st in next sc, finish off.
LEFT LEG
Rnd 1: With right side facing, join Green with sc in first unworked
sc on Rnd 15; sc in each sc around; do not join, place marker:
25 sc.
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around; slip st in next sc, finish off leaving
a long end for sewing.
Sew inner leg seam.
SHIRT
FRONT
With White, ch 29 loosely.
Row 1 (Right side): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch
across: 28 sc.
Note: Mark last row as right side.
Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.
To decrease, pull up a loop in next 2 sc, YO and draw through
all 3 loops on hook (counts as one sc).
Row 4: Turn; slip st in first 4 sc, ch 1, decrease, sc in next 16 sc,
decrease, leave remaining 4 sc unworked: 18 sc.
To work beginning decrease, pull up a loop in first 2 sc, YO and
draw through all 3 loops on hook (counts as one sc).
Rows 5-7: Ch 1, turn; work beginning decrease, sc in each sc
across to last 2 sc, decrease: 12 sc.
Rows 8-11: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across; do not finish off.
RIGHT STRAP
Row 1: Ch 1, turn; sc in first sc, decrease, leave remaining 9 sc
unworked: 2 sc.
Rows 2-7: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.
Finish off.
LEFT STRAP
Row 1: With wrong side facing, skip next 6 sc from Right Strap
and join White with slip st in next sc; ch 1, work beginning
decrease, sc in last sc: 2 sc.
Rows 2-7: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.
Finish off.
BACK
Work same as Front.
Sew shoulder and side seams.
NECK EDGING
With right side facing, join Green with sc in any sc at Back neck
edge; sc evenly around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off.
ARMHOLE EDGING
With right side facing, join Green with sc in seam at underarm;
sc evenly around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off.
Repeat for second armhole.
FINISHING
Trace desired number patterns (page 4) and cut from felt; glue
numbers to front of Shirt.

HEADBAND
With Green, ch 4 loosely.
Row 1 (Right side): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch
across: 3 sc.
Rows 2-50: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.
Finish off leaving a long end for sewing.
Sew ends together.
GYM SHOE (Make 2)
BOTTOM
With White, ch 3 loosely; being careful not to twist ch, join with
slip st to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (Right side): Ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around; do not join,
place marker: 6 sc.
Note: Mark last round as right side.
Rnd 2: 2 Sc in each sc around: 12 sc.
Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around: 18 sc.
Rnd 4: 2 Sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 hdc in each
of next 6 sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc: 28 sts.
Rnd 5: Working in Back Loops Only, sc in next 8 sc, hdc in next
12 hdc, sc in next 8 sc; slip st in both loops of next sc, finish off.
Rnd 6: With right side facing and working in both loops, join Black
with sc in same st as slip st; sc in each st around; do not join,
place marker: 28 sc.
Rnd 7: Sc in next 12 sc, place marker around last sc made for
st placement, sc in each sc around; slip st in next sc, finish off.
TONGUE
Row 1: With right side facing and working in Back Loops Only,
join Black with sc in marked sc; sc in next 7 sc, leave remaining
20 sts unworked (Sides): 8 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn; working in both loops, work beginning
decrease, sc in next 4 sc, decrease: 6 sc.
Rows 3-5: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.
Finish off.
SIDES
Row 1: With right side facing, join Black with sc in first sc on
Rnd 7 to left of Tongue; sc in next 19 sts: 20 sc.
Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across changing to White in
last sc.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across; finish off.
SHOELACE
With White, ch 65; finish off.
Using photo as a guide for placement, weave Shoelace through
ends of rows on Sides and tie ends in a bow.
BASKETBALL
With Bronze, ch 3 loosely; being careful not to twist ch, join with
slip st to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (Right side): Ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around; do not join,
place marker: 6 sc.
Rnd 2: 2 Sc in each sc around: 12 sc.
Rnd 3: (2 Sc in next sc, sc in next sc) around: 18 sc.
Rnd 4: (2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc) around: 24 sc.
Rnd 5: (2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc) around: 30 sc.
Rnds 6-9: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 10: (Sc in next 3 sc, decrease) around: 24 sc.
Rnd 11: (Sc in next 2 sc, decrease) around: 18 sc.
Rnd 12: (Sc in next sc, decrease) around: 12 sc.
Stuff Basketball firmly with fiberfill.
Rnd 13: Decrease around: 6 sc.
Rnd 14: (Skip next sc, slip st in next sc) around; finish off.
With Black, use first basketball diagram (page 4) as a guide
to add straight stitches on one side of Basketball, then turn
Basketball over and follow second diagram to add straight
stitches on the opposite side, making sure stitching lines from
each side meet at points indicated with dots.
Sew hook side of fastener to Basketball and loop side to paw to
hold Basketball.
