UNIT 2. STATES OF MATTER

Matter exists as solid, liquid or gas.
SOLIDS

The mass, volume and shape can´t change. They are
fixed.

                According to particle theory, in
                solids, particles are very close
together, held by strong forces. They
can only vibrate, they do not change
                     position.
LIQUIDS
The mass and volume can´t change but their shape
can. It depends on the container they are in.

               The particles are close together
but held by weak forces of
               attraction.They have some freedom
of movement, so they flow and
               slide easily.
GASES
The mass of a gas can´t change. The volume and
shape can change to fill the container they are in.

The particles are far apart and
                  move quickly in all directions.
They have no force of attraction.
                  They collide with each other.
