Classic Definition Gloria Ladson-Billings in Dreamkeepers: “ A pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural and historical referents to convey knowledge, to impart skills, and to change attitudes. Practitioner’s Definition Geneva Gay in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (2000): “ The use of cultural knowledge, prior experiences, frames of reference, and performance styles of ethnically diverse students to make (therapeutic) encounters more relevant to, and effective for, them. Definition for Therapists Socioculturally conscious, that is, recognizes that there are multiple ways of perceiving reality and that these ways are influenced by one’s location in the social order. Affirming views of (clients) from diverse backgrounds. Sees herself as both responsible for and capable of bringing about behavioral change that will make their experience in school more successful. Understiands how (clients) construct knowledge and is capable of promoting (clients) knowledge construction. Knows about the lives of her clients. Our Definition Hollie says in Validating and Affirming (2011) “ The validation and affirmation of the home culture and home language for the purposes of building and bridging the (client) to success in the culture of school and mainstream society. Simply put, CLR is going to where the students are culturally and linguistically for the aim of bringing them where they need to be academically. 11. You know who you are serving or who you are not serving. Who are the underserved in your caseload/program/school/agency? Key term to remember is underserved : An underserved (client) is any (client) who is not successful therapeutically, socially, and/or behaviorally in school because the Program (Lincoln) as an institution is not being responsive to the student. 12. Culturally Responsive Therapy Incorporate song : Use their favorite songs, analyze them and reference them appropriately (cultural consultation) in treatment. Use rhymes : Don’t try to rap but use rhyming phrases whenever possible. African worldview: Survival of the tribe with the family as the primary unity of society.
