This document contains a message from Jason Madhosingh to alumni of the MBA class of 2006. It discusses Jason's experience in the MBA program, including long hours spent reading and writing. - Hi, My name is Jason Madhosingh, I'm a very happy graduate from 2006.
- My family is from Trinidad, (I know there is at least one other Trini here-- Oi!), I’ve spent most of my youth here in the US in Tampa, Florida, and my adult life in DC, NYC and LA.
- Now I work for Nokia, the world leader in mobile devices. I lead a team that does global digital and product marketing for our software and services brand, Ovi by Nokia. We launched the brand in late 2007, and I’ve been working with it since in various roles..
- When I was at University of Maryland, I focused on strategy and entrepreneurship (I already had a substantial marketing background from work and undergrad @ Georgetown), I focused on strategy and entrepreneurship because I wanted the ability to do my job from anywhere in the world.
- I was fortunate to be elected by my peers as Student Body president, and even luckier to get to play soccer twice a week for Smith. Oh yeah, I was in Track 3 (and track three rules!)
- I remember being exactly where you are now just a few years ago-- so much has changed. When I sat where you are now in 2004, (literally) Google was not a public company,, and there was no such thing as an iPhone.

- In 2004, Van munching hall hadn’t undergone any renovations, and was much smaller The Smith school has gone through many changes in the same amount of time—opening international programs in europe and asia; adding the other part of van munching, improving the MBA Lounge, even a new Dean!
- The Dean was Howard Frank Former Dean Frank with two of his favorite awards from the provost: “ Operating closest to the edge of the precipice” & “ Continuous metamorphosis to avoid predators”
- And my marketing professor, now the dean of academics, Bob Krapfel had a smaller beard than me!

- http://www.layoutsparks.com/1/194952/in-the-jungle-mom.html Most of the time, you will find that your head is down in the weeds. It seems like you have 1 billon pages of reading, 45 papers, 65 balance sheets, and sometimes it feels like you aren’t accomplishing as much as you could elsewhere.

Burroughs, Marlon Brando, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy
- And everyone is a great person, especially those you will spend the next two years with at Smith. The trick you will need to figure out is how to make the most of your time together. (I hope you recognize some of these folks :)

- Find at least one new hobby. Hobbies will help you bond with classmates and colleagues,and may eveny provide you some stress release. Making masks from Steel wool, however, is at your own risk.

- Photo: Jason Madhosingh Spend some time in one of the clubs! In our year we had a lot of clubs– one club for every twenty students! SO there were lots of opportunities, whether you wanted a professional or cultural club, to participate and be part of something more than your studies. This was at an event for the international club– founded by some of my classmates. There were several cross cultural events during the year (such as India Night, shown here, Chinese New Year, Italian night, and even Thanksgiving!)
- Smith is not the only thing on campus. Don’t forget that! There are terrific intramurals and other clubs, as well as my personal favorite, Intramurals. (our club soccer team won the trophy three times!)
- Great speakers (Roger Barnes Fannie Mae) are constantly @Smith and on campus. One of the most emotional and memorable for me was Roger Barnes. If you don’t remember, Roger Barnes was a whistleblower on Fannie Mae’s ‘Cookie Jar’ accounting, and led to the exposure of, and censure of that agency. He paid great personal consequences for his actions. This particular speaker was during out ethics week, where we also “got” to go to a prison and see white collar offenders and hear their stories.
- Make New Friends. Here Testudo visits us on club recruiting day. (PS– they can’t wash those costumes and they don’t make new ones every year. Give Testudo a high Five, not hug)

- http://www.vicsport.asn.au/Assets/Images/networking2.jpg Making new friends is also about networking And networking is not only about expanding your base beyond school colleagues, but also about maintaining your existing base. I can say that I have gotten every role I have had in my career, not only based on qualifications, but also from cultivating and managing a network of colleagues and friends across industries and geographies.
