3. Setting you up for success
This workbook is a tool that has been designed for you, the learner and will help
you facilitate effective sharing of your insights, newly acquired knowledge and
experiences as well as be a place to capture ideas, connections and learning
treasures that you deem valuable both now AND in the future.
This workbook has been designed to help you integrate the learning into your life
and at the same time share your experience, insight and new practices with your
colleagues. By sharing your learning - you will deepen your understanding and in
the process create an important business context for the learning experience as it
applies to the growth of our organization. It is what will help you counteract and
overcome your natural resistors easing the temptations of:
– Going back to “your comfort zone”
– Not taking the risk of trying something new and feeling vulnerable
– Investing your energy is easier things
This workbook is also a communication tool. As you will discover, it is designed to
accompany you on your learning journey and provide a home for the exciting new
ideas and practices as well as contacts you make. You will leave this extraordinary
experience with so much to share with your family, friends, and colleagues that you
will want to get clear in your own mind. What are the most valuable and useful or
provocative things you want to share with others when they ask, “How was
KNOWvember?” So dive in and enjoy!

_____
Creativity At Its Natural Best
Stephen James Joyce, Teaching an Anthill to Fetch (page 161)
“It is becoming increasingly apparent that if the teams and companies are to
adapt to the rapid changes occurring in society, they will have to tap into their
natural creative abilities and turn that capacity into innovation. Smart companies are
already doing that.
Meyer and Davis provide a fascinating set of examples, in It’s Alive, where
companies have emulated the creativity and innovation of natural systems to build
strongly adaptive businesses.
One example is the John Deere company. One of their divisions manufactures
seeders. The business challenge the company faced was that there were 1.6 billion
possible permutations for the configurations that could be ordered by customers.
Trying to create a production schedule to optimize work hours and other resources
was challenging, to say the least. John Deere used the services of a company
called Optimax Systems. Using genetic algorithms, Optimax would "breed” the
various possible schedules to test for “fitness” –the fittest schedule would be the
one the computers bred overnight before each working day. Using powerful
computers, the breeding process could be repeated over 40,000 times in a vastly
accelerated version of natural selection. The results were so dramatic at John
Deere that suppliers had trouble keeping up with John Deere's requirements, and
production schedules met target consistently.
4. Meetings That Work (Quote from Facilitations at a Glance, Pocket Guide, p. 103)
Here are the ingredients of all effective meetings:
a detailed agenda that spells out what will be discussed, the goal of the discussion, who
is bringing that item forward and an estimate of how long each items will take.
clear process notes that describe the tools and techniques that will be used.
assigned roles such as a facilitator, chair person, minute taker, and timekeeper.
