BIOGRAPHY
James Xavier Barbour was born in Dallas, Texas
and is of Spanish descent. His passion for art began
to form when he was a young child and his works
attracted increasing public attention and recognition
beginning in his early years. He had his first
professional art exhibition soon after.
Barbour is a professional painter and sculptor who
blends Old Masters techniques with contemporary
narrative. His work courts ambiguity, and
symbolism and is inspired by his love for the human
figure. He is very dedicated to using the techniques
of the Old Masters and concerned with anatomical,
and realistic accuracy and a seriousness that
requires attention to detail and slow, rich execution.
3. His images are filled with movement and
symbolism. They frequently ask us to reflect upon
the eternal or universal aspects of our lives and to
redefine truth and perception. Barbour is also a
dedicated Professor and lecturer of Human
Anatomy, Figurative Art / Portraiture and in Art
History at The Academy of Art University in San
Francisco and has also previously taught different
art courses in New York, New Jersey, and Italy for
several years. He also founded The Estudio
Barbour Atelier where he privately trains a select
number of artists in advanced anatomy and more
advanced drawing, painting and sculpture
techniques in the classical realist tradition of the
Old Masters and will occasionally travel to
conduct various art demonstrations and workshops
during the year.
Barbour received his Masters of Fine Arts in
Painting and in Anatomy from the New York
Academy of Art, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from
the Hartford Art School in Connecticut. He has also
studied at the Art Students League of New York,
and lived in Italy where he exhibited and trained in
fresco/mural, traditional Old Masters techniques,
and in art conservation. At The New York Academy
of Art he studied under leading artists including
such as: Vincent Desiderio, Martha Mayer
Erlebacher, Steven Assael, Deane Keller, Wade
4. Schuman, Edward Schmidt, Leonid Lerman, and
Stephen Brown.
Barbour paintings, sculptures, and drawings are
currently represented in several art museums and
galleries, and in many private and corporate
collections worldwide. In addition, he accepts a
limited number of new portrait commissions each
year. He has also received multiple awards for his
work including the recent The George Sugarman
Grant. He has been commissioned for several public
and private murals in Italy, New York City,
Connecticut, Texas, and California. He recently
completed an 80 ft ceiling mural in Alameda,
California.
