What is MOOC
Online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the
web. It provides interaction and create a community for student,
professors and teaching assistance.
MOOC is a course not just an online course it is a way to connect
and collaborate while developing digital skills and way of engaging
in the learning process.
Purpose of MOOC
MOOCs have different purposes some MOOC are created based on the
idea of democratizing education and developing social well-being. MOOC
also aims at improving specific online skills, aims at increasing access to
high education, decreases cost and facilitate the teaching and learning
process.
Brief history of MOOC
• It is through networks that the learning experience can generate an
interesting experiences. This leads to the raise of MOOCs. Did you know
that the first one was introduced in 2008 and it was called ‘Connectivism and
Connective Knowledge/2008’ (CCK8), created by educators Stephen
Downes and George Siemens. Building off a for-credit course at the
University of Manitoba, Canada, this was the first class designed behind the
acronym of ‘MOOC’ and used many different ways to engage students with
the topic including Facebook groups, Wiki pages, blogs, forums and other
resources.

Advantages and Disadvantages of MOOC
Advantages
• It is free
• Learning is informal and at student’s own
pace of learning
• Computer and internet access are only
resources needed nothing much
• Students can share work, critique others
and receive feedback. Provide online
interaction amongst student
Disadvantages
• X -MOOCs involve costs, sometimes not
important
• Limited real-world engagement
• Technical problems
• Academic dishonesty are likely to happen
• Students must be accountable for their
own work
