Key Goals of ICeWater
• Develop infrastructure for smart metering and real-time
monitoring of urban water systems
• Optimize the water network operations to reduce energy
requirements and hence operational costs
• Detect and localize leakages in real-time
• Lower consumption during peak periods by proposing dynamic
pricing
• Evaluate developed solutions in two pilots (Milan & Timisoara)
based on market needs and constraints

Use Cases
• A module for energy and water quality control that supports
the operation phase using online data,
• A module for water leak detection and control based on online
sensor data
• A planning module for the water supply system for analysis
and evaluation of scenarios and schedule optimization based on
historical data
• A module for water demand management that supports
dynamic pricing,
• Networking components, service oriented architecture based
communication platform
7. 2nd AQUAKNIGHT Conference,
21 May 2014, Aqaba, Jordan
Costas Loupos, ICCS7
Mapping of use cases to DSS Modules
• Built in a top-down manner
• Mapping between use-cases and the functional modules
depicted
• Two distinct types of functions: online (operation phase) and
offline (planning phase).
• Five DSS modules, namely:
Water Loss Management (WLM)
Water Operation Support (WOS)
Water Supply System Planning (WSSP)
Water Demand Management (WDM)
Water Asset Management (WAM)

Communication Platform
• Service Oriented Architecture based platform for flexibility,
extensibility and increased ability to expose internal
functionality as well as to integrate existing assets
• Harmonization of existing proprietary protocols used by field
devices and utilities infrastructure into a standard-oriented open
source ICT core
• Connectivity from the level of field devices to the ICeWater
control centre (DSS modules and User Interface)
• Multi-layer architecture encompassing sensing devices, gateway
layer, middleware & web service consumers
• Security to attacks by implementing access control features,
resilience to system failures by tailor-made algorithms detecting
anomalous behaviour

Show-Stoppers ICeWater Solution
Water Utilities rely on industrial control
systems, which are reliable but tend to
follow proprietary standards
Minimize proprietary communication to the
field level and adopt a uniform contract in
the network architecture core
Adding new field devices, network
components or applications is usually
done manually and is inflexible
Bring data point discovery concepts into the
infrastructure will help automate processes
Water Utilities often suffer from vendor
lock-in (dependency on original vendor)
Service Oriented Architecture & a generic
data model / ontology will showcase
independence and interoperability potential
Whilst often sharing common resources,
integration with other utilities or
beneficiaries is not promoted
Identify potential collaboration ground e.g.
with electrical or weather facilities. This is
greatly facilitated by Service Oriented
Architecture concepts
Network oriented SCADA systems are
facing security attacks with increasing
frequency
Access rights control to all components,
clearly identifying permitted stakeholders.
Adopt end-to-end security mechanisms
where possible
Challenges and Solutions
10. 2nd AQUAKNIGHT Conference,
21 May 2014, Aqaba, Jordan
Costas Loupos, ICCS10
Demonstration site 1: Timisoara
•Pilot Details:
• "Neptun" DMA is composed of 12 streets with 4-story block of flats and houses
• water supply network: 3,645 km,
• 88.2% - steel older than 20 years, 11.8% HDPE between 11-20 years old
• length of connections: 0.863 km, 50% lead, steel and grey cast iron, 50% HDPE; 100%
metered (80.4%-domestic customers, 19.6%-economic agents)
• pressure in the system: 2.0 - 2.3 atmospheres
• 28 valves, 17 hydrants
• Pilot Issues:
• Water quality (due to surface water network)
• ICeWater Solution:
• More sensors inside network measuring water quality
• Development of respective DSS sub-module
11. 2nd AQUAKNIGHT Conference,
21 May 2014, Aqaba, Jordan
Costas Loupos, ICCS11
Pilot Details:
• Center-south of Milan, two blocks and about 0.1 km2
• 69 customer points that are mainly condos (over a dozen companies and municipal
offices) characterized by meters whose diameter ranges between 20 and 80 mm
• Will be equipped with 7 pressure and flow sensors, where flow ex-change nodes with
the rest of the water distribution system occur, for demand, pressure and leak
management
• 20 noise sensors for leak detection will be installed along the mains at a distance of
nearly 100 meters from one to the other
Pilot Issues:
• Energy Effeciency (no automated demand image)
• ICeWater: improve pressure management through pressure monitoring sensors and
valves, DSS sub-module
