1876 the British North America Act inaugurated a pattern
where Parliament gradually surrendered its direct governing
powers.
1887 The Imperial Conference began to attempt to strengthen
Britain’s ties with the colonies that had become self governing.

3. Abolition of Slavery
The Slave Trade Act in 1807 abolished slave trade in the
Empire.
1833 the Slavery Abolition Act was passed, not only was slave
trade illegal, but now slavery itself.
On August 1 1834 all slaves in the British Empire were
emancipated.
