8. Temperance Was a organized American movement that started around the early 1800’s. to stop the manufacture and consumption of alcohol. This was a movement of women which believed drinking was responsible for poverty , issues with ill health, and crime. In 1874 a group of women established the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). They influenced the issue of prohibition into the election process.

10. The 18th amendment The 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibited the manufacture, sale, transport, import, or export of alcoholic beverages. However the amendment did not address the consumption ofalcohol.

12. THE VOLSTEAD ACT When the 18th amendment prohibited the production of alcohol it did not address the consumption of it , so a bill was passed to define the terms of the amendment. The bill was passed the same day Woodrow Wilson vetoed it . Congress override it October 28, 1919 The purpose of the act to prohibit intoxicating beverages to regulate the manufacture, production, use and sale of high-proof spirits for other than beverage purposes, and to insure an ample supply of alcohol and promote its use in scientific research and in the development of fuel, dye and other lawful industries
