2. TYPES OF POWER PLANTS
Wind power plants (1No-1MW)
Solar power plant
(1No-2MW)
Hydel-power plant
(22No-42240MW)
Thermal power plant(6No-7900MW)
3. The installed capacity of APGENCO on
31.07.2012 is 8924.9 MW.
Comprising 5092.5 MW Thermal, 3829.4 MW
Hydro, 2 MW Wind power stations and 1 MW
solar power.
It contributes about half the total Energy
Requirement of AP.
APGENCO is third largest power generating
utility in the Country next to NTPC &
MAHAGENCO.
It installed a Hydro capacity of 3664.4 MW
and is the second highest among the Country.
4. INTRODUCTION
With the world on a development ,
there is shortage of power in most places
while the demand seems to be in a never
ending . There are several answers to this
challenge such as the nuclear power plants,
but the conventional thermal power plants
also play an equally important role in this
power generation..
5. CLASSIFICATION
THERMAL POWER PLANTS ARE CLASSIFIED BY THE
TYPE OF FUEL AND THE TYPE OF PRIME MOVER
INSTALLED
By fuel
Nuclear power plants
Fossil fuelled power plants
Biomass fuelled power plants
Solar thermal
By prime mover
Steam turbine
Gas turbine
Combined cycle
Reciprocating engines
Micro turbines , stirling engine
6. NEED FOR THERMAL POWER
GENERATION
Scarcity of water resources
Widely available alternate fuels
Maintenance and lubrication cost is lower
Coal is abundant
Working fluid
10. The layout of steam power plant is shown
in the above figure.
It consist of four main circuits they are:
1.Coal and Ash circuit
2.Air and flue gas circuit
3.Water and Steam circuit
&
4.Cooling water circuit
11. DETAILED PROCESS OF POWER
GENERATION IN A THERMAL POWER
PLANT:
Water intake

Other monitoring instruments
12. ADVANTAGES OF THERMAL POWER
PLANTS
Initial cost & Fuel
Less space & can be Install at any place
Cost of generation
Maintenances and lubrication cost
Nature's mercy
construction and commission time
13. DISADVANTAGES OF THERMAL
POWER PLANT
Air pollution
Starting time & Efficiency
Transportation of fuel
Power generation cost
Requires skilled manpower
Life of the plant
14. FUTURE PROSPECTS
Accelerating the Development of
CO2 Capture and Storage Technology is
the Key to Realize Next-generation Power
Generation System.
Preventive Maintenance Technologies that
Support the Long-term, Stable Operation
Facilities and Extension of the Service Life
of High-temperature Gas Turbine Parts.
