Day 1
Objectives:
SWBAT understand how to
utilize a simple topographical
map and explain its use to a peer.
SWBAT navigate themselves
with a partner around the school
setting while using a compass.
Equipment:
6-7 compasses, 6-7 topographical
maps, 10 colored cones (marks
for compass navigation
Activities:
Map Reading- Students will use a
topographical map to navigate
with a partner around Tussey
View park, located behind
NVCS. The students will be
locating colored cones.
Day 2
Objectives:
SWBAT understand how to use a
GPS ETREX device successfully
in class room activities.
SWBAT navigate, with a partner,
an outdoor setting while using a
GPS location device.
Equipment:
10 ETREX GPS devices
(Garmin), 6-7 topographical
maps
Activities:
Tree Identity- Students will
navigate, with a partner, around
Tussey View park using GPS
devices. The students will be
locating different species of trees
Day 3
Objectives:
SWBAT demonstrate loco
motor movements and
fitness activities at each
waypoint necessary to
navigate and complete the
Waypoint station
performances.
SWBAT answer questions
during the debriefing
activity concerning GPS use.
SWBAT demonstrate
knowledge and
understanding of the
satellite maps provided and
the GPS technology on the
GPS devices.
2. Compass Direction- Students will
travel, with a partner, from the
north end of the building to the
south end. Students will then
travel from the east to the west
end while using a compass.
Students should travel in the
shortest distance available.

of orienteering with GPS devices,

maps during a written quiz at the
end of the lesson.
SWBAT to perform a “trust fall”
within a small and large group.
Equipment:
12 Written quizzes
Activities:
Trust Fall- Students will
participate in a “trust fall”
activity within small groups.
Students will be shown, through
group demonstration, how to
effectively trust one another
during this activity.
Assessment- Students will
complete the 10 question quiz
during the conclusion of the
lesson.
Day 5
Objectives:
SWBAT navigate themselves,
with a partner, around another
park by NVCS (Holmes Foster
park).
Equipment:
10 ETREX GPS devices
Activities:
Students will provided with GPS
coordinates of specific trees
found in Holmes-Foster park.
Students will input the
coordinates and only use the GPS
ETREX devices to find the
waypoints. At each waypoint
students will have to identify the
correct species of tree before
moving to the next waypoint.
Day 6
Objectives:
SWBAT navigate themselves,
with a partner, around Mount
Nittany (nearby mountain).
Equipment:
6-7 topographical maps of Mount
Nittany, 10 ETREX GPS
devices, 6-7 compasses
Activities:
This is the culminating activity of
the unit. Students will hike and
navigate, with a partner, Mount
Nittany finding waypoints and
caches along the way.

Equipment: 7 GPS devices, 7 maps of Tussey View Park, 10 Plastic Easter Eggs, 7 note
cards, whistle
Introduction: 5-7 minutes
(Check for Understanding) An overview of the 1st lesson in this unit will be covered.
Students will be asked questions verbally and responses will be written on the whiteboard
in the Multi-Purpose Room.
Questions 1- What can you tell me about the Map we looked at yesterday? (Student
responses should include the GPS coordinates of Tussey View Park: 40. 7838452 / 77.
8411673 and descriptions of the area behind our school)
Question 2-What should you keep in mind when navigating yourself outdoors (Responses
should include…have a partner with you at all times, be prepared with hydration,
protection, nutrition, and first aid, have a plan, etc,)
Questions 3-What can you tell me about the GPS dev ices we used in the first lesson of this
unit? (Responses should include how to power them on, how to use the menu function, how
to mark a waypoint, discussion of finding waypoints using the “Go to” function.
Student Objectives: Student Will Be Able To
SWBAT demonstrate loco motor movements and fitness activities at each waypoint
necessary to navigate and complete the Waypoint station performances (when students find
each waypoint they will follow cues to either perform jumps, hops, gallops or fitness
exercises such as push ups, sit ups, Burpees, balances, jumping jacks, x-outs, and scissor
kicks)
SWBAT answer questions during the debriefing activity. (What were the techniques used
when finding the waypoints? What strategies did you and your partner find to be effective
in completing the course? What Waypoint performances did you find to be most
challenging?)
SWBAT demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the satellite maps provided and the
GPS technology on the GPS devices.

5. Activity 1: 5-7 minutes
(Multi-Purpose Room) Partner students together. Allow them to review the GPS devices.
Allow them to input the coordinates of the 10 waypoints into the devices. Water/bathroom
before leaving building. Students will also have the option to agree to the “Full Value
Contract” for the following activity.
Activity 2: 30 minutes
Students will use the GPS devices to navigate themselves to the Waypoints and complete
the following criteria with their partner. The following descriptions will be written on a
note card and placed in the Easter Eggs.

Way point 2- Blue Triangle 782444/ 841920, 10 hops on either foot

After the teams have completed the performances they can return to the pavilion near the
school.
Activity 3: 5 minutes
Students will meet together at the pavilion for debriefing. A whistle blast will signal
students to return to the pavilion. Students will be asked questions described above in the
student objectives.
