2. Author Biography Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1899. In May of 1918, Hemingway volunteered for duty in World War I, serving as an ambulance driver on the Italian front. The Old Man and the Sea was published in 1952 to wide critical acclaim. The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1952.

3. Two types of Tragedy According to him, the novella “The Old Man and the Sea” is a tragedy because there are two term “Hemartia” and “Catharsis” presented in the novella suggested by Aristotle for the tragedies. Hamartia Kath arsis/ Catharsis

4. The end of the story The story ends as a tragedy but it was a good tragedy. Like, Old Man’s pride leads him to the destruction of his quarry also him to achieve the respect of the village people and secure his relationship with the boy. So the spirit of tragedy is optimistic rather than pessimistic.
