• Situational leadership by Hersey and Blanchard
• One minute manager by Blanchard and Spencer.
What is 5S?
• Work Place Organization and Productivity
Improvement Tool.
• Also known as the “5 pillars of visual
workplace”.
• A team based activity where everyone
works together to improve the conditions
in a specific area
Work place management
A person who works
with a “messy” desk
spends, on average,
½ to 1 hours per
day looking for
things or being
distracted by things.
Work place management
What are current techniques that you
employ to manage your workspace?
Sort - The First Pillar
This activity involves systematic sorting out, labeling
and removal of all items not needed in the work area
so that only the needed items remain.
Objective – Clutter reduction by clearly distinguishing
between what is needed and to be kept and what is
unneeded and to be discarded.
Straighten - The second Pillar
This activity involves developing a place for
everything and labeling it so that it can be found
quickly and put away when not in use.
Objective – To ensure everything has a place and
there is a place for everything needed.
Shine - The third Pillar
This activity involves cleaning the work place. While
cleaning you observe for early signs of troubles on
the equipment before these turn into major
breakdowns or defects.
Objective – Clean the work place and detect the
problems before they happens.
Standardize - The fourth Pillar
This activity involves making a standardized state
that exists when the first three pillars are properly
maintained.
Objective – Make sure that there is a standardized
method for the first three pillars.
Sustain - The fifth Pillar
This activity involves sustaining the 5S activities on a
continuous basis. After a year and more everyone
needs to still be doing 5S activities.
Objective – Make a commitment to the 5s process
now and future.
