Biomes are major geographical areas defined by their plant and animal communities that have adapted to a particular climate. 1. Biomes<br />Biomes are geographical areas filled with major communities, plants and animals. They are also known as major life zones. Biomes often have different types of animals and plants, or fauna (Animals) and flora (Plants), which have adapted to the environment. The same animals and plants can live in more than one biome.<br />Each biome is characterized by a particular type of climate, vegetation and animals, and extends over a large region of Earth’s surface.<br />Could a polar bear live in a desert? Why?<br />Biomes can be classified as<br />Terrestrial (land) Biomes which are often classified by their dominant plant life.<br />Aquatic biomes are biomes found in water and are usually named by their physical features.<br />1. Tropical rain forest biome: locates around the equator. They receive high level of rain (precipitation)<br /> Tree: canopy Animal: monkey, frog, reptile, insects<br />2. Desert biomes located on 30oN -15oN, 30oS, 15oS. Receive less 10 inches or 25 cm of rain (precipitation) per year. It Comes from the Latin word deserted= abandon, forsake. <br />It is dominated by rock, sand, cactus and poor soil. Most plants are perennial<br />Animals: Rodent, shrub, birds, snake, tortoises<br />3. Temperate deciduous Biome: locate 60oN, 30oS. Cold winter<br />Deciduous trees lose their leaves; beech, oak, maple. <br />Grow during the spring and summer and lose their leave in autumn and lay dormant during the winter to prevent water lost. The soil is rich in nutrient_ Animals: bacteria, earthworm, fungi, fox, deer, squirrel and raccoons.<br />4. Grassland biome: receive 10 inches of rain. Temperate rain forest biome<br />Conifers, redwood, spruce, pine, fern<br />Animal: deer<br />8. Taiga biome = Boreal forest: animal: caribou, deer<br />9.
