Formulate questions using the verb ÊTRE in the
present tense

4. Être is one of the most common French
verbs. It is irregular in conjugation and
literally means "to be."

5. Formation of the present tense of the verb Être
Formation du present de l’ indicatif du verbe Être
the present tense is composed of two elements: the subject
pronouns or subject and the form of the verb.
It is formed by:
The subject pronoun
+
The form of the verb
Le canard blanc (il) est Content.
sujet The form of the verb (être)

6. The subject of a verb is the person or thing which performs the action of that verb.
Subject pronoun is a word that can replace the subject in a sentence
French: Jean est. Il est.
English: Jean is. He is.

7. You use je to talk about yourself.
e. g. Je suis français (e).
You use tu to address a friend.
e.g. Tu es américain (e).
You ues il to talk about a boy or a man.
e.g. Il est blond.
You use elle to talk about a girl /woman.
e.g. Elle est blonde.
Il and elle can be used for things
e.g. Le collège? Il est grand.
You use nous when refering to yourself and
another person or other people.
e.g. Nous sommes americans.
You use vous when talking to two or more
people.
We use ils for masculine plural /group of males
and females
e.g.Ils sont des américans.
We use Elles for two or more females.
e.g. Elles sont américaines.

8. CONJUGATION OF THE VERB
ÊTRE = TO BE
IN THE PRESENT TENSE
• Je suis I am
• Tu es You are (sing. Informal)
• Elle est she is
• Il est he is
• Nous sommes we are
• Vous êtes you are (plur. Formal)
• Ils sont they are (sing.and fem.Plur.)
• Elles sont they are (fem./Plur.)

9. CONJUGATION OF THE VERB

10. Negation
Negation is formed by placing ne ... pas
around the conjugated verb, which, in this
case, is the verb Être.
• Jean n’est pas petit!.
• Jean is not small.

11. Present tense of the verb Être in the negation (ne…pas)
*Note ne becomes n’ before a vowel.
Je ne suis pas = I am not
Tu n’es pas = you are not
Il n’est pas = he is not
Elle n’est pas = she is not
Nous ne sommes pas = we are not
Vous n’êtes pas = you are not
Ils ne sont pas = they are not (sing..plur.)
Elles ne sont pas = they are not (fem. Plur.)

12. Asking Questions
Reverse the subject pronoun with the verb or you just add a question
mark on the affirmative sentence.
•suis-je? = Am I? Je suis?
•es-tu? (affirmative: tu es) Or Tu es?
•est -il ? il est?
est-elle?
• elle est?
•somme-nous? Nous sommes?
•ête-vous vous êtes?
•sont-ils? ils sont?
•sont-elles? Elles sont?

•Oui, je suis. Non, je ne suis pas.
•Oui, tu es. Non, tu n’ es pas.
•Oui, il est . Non, il n’ est pas.

13. Tatou et l’escargot
Armadillo and the snail
Edouard: Mais non, Joe-Bob, tu Edouard: But no, Joe-Bob,
n'es pas un tatou! you are not an armadillo!
Tex est un tatou. Tex et Tammy Tex is an armadillo. Tex and
sont des tatous. Tammy are armadillos.
Toi et moi, nous ne sommes pas You and I, we are not
