HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
Evaluation Question 2
The characters in my thriller title sequence are only two – that of a girl and a creature (of
female looks).
I included the girl, as she is a conventional character to the thriller/horror genre with her
being in the role of the victim.
The teenage girl character is around the age of my target audience. The first time when
the audience meets with her, she is portrayed as weak and vulnerable, which is often as
female teen stereotype. What helps creating this presentation are the camera angles and
costume used. Wearing a prom dress outside the school suggests a problem.
As female teens are usually portrayed as naive and insecure in the thriller/horror
genres, my protagonist does reflect these qualities at the start of my opening when we see
her crying and running into the woods afterwards.
A bond of emotions as pity is created between the audience and the girl when they see her
crying.
When the audience meets with the antagonist, the bond becomes even bigger, as it is
seen as a threat to the girl. The bond with the creature is weaker due to the conventional
looks, music, movements in the particular sequences, which make it creepy and
scary, giving the idea that it is the “bad” guy.
Gender is represented in a stereotypical way to some point through the victim girl
character and thriller genre conventions.
Here is where the horror and fantasy genres play their role. Supernatural powers and
living creatures are always dominant and more powerful than the normal human being. It
is stereotypical for these genres that the supernatural antagonist will harm the protagonist.
The clothes worn by both of my characters are conventional, as the girl wears a
dress, which highlights her femininity and her status as an indefensible “pray”, and the
creature is in black, signifying darkness, curse, danger and giving an awareness feel to the
audience.
The protagonist clothing may not be stereotypical in age point of view, because teenagers
are mostly associated with casual clothing like jeans, shirts and sneakers, but then the
prom dress doesn’t take it much further as every teen has his prom night at some point.
