2. Diocletian’s Palace is the palace of the Roman emperor
Diocetian in the town Split. It was built by the emperor
Diocletian around 300 AD and he lived there after he
stopped being the emperor in 305 AD until he died in 316
AD.
It was built in a cove of a peninsula 5 km southwest of
Salona – the capital city of the Dalmatian province. Today,
the remains represent a portion of the historic part of
Split that was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in
Europe since 1979.

4. The exact date of the
beginning of construction
of the Palace is not
determined. It is
presumed that it began
around 295 AD, after the
intoduction of tetrarchy
(four rulers).
5. When Diocletian
resigned in 305 AD,
the palace was not
finished. The
architects and the
builders of the palace
are not known.
6. Diocletian’s Palace is
not only an
extraordinary
exampled of a
monument of it’s
period, but represents
a national and global
treasure.
