Technology Use Plan Power Point by Marie Lawrick
Buddha An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.
Simon Hill Planning Team Principal Certified Teachers Classified Tutors & Assistant Teachers Office Staff Librarians Parents Business community leaders Education Technologist
Ripples This is the beginning of your Simon Hill Tech Plan. It is a fluid liquid living document, filled with your ideas, concepts, vision and meant to create your pathway to achieving the goals and outcomes set forth from this committee. So dip your feet in the water and let’s create ripples circling unending that last a lifetime for the learners, ourselves and each other.
Rationale One might question - Why develop a technology use plan? To have a navigation map on the waterways to guide our collective vision to meet our goals in an effective and efficient manner with the best results possible for ongoing success. Preparing the learners for tomorrow is critical to achieving the standards set forth nationally, statewide and by our communities.
Process Description Step 1: Take Notice of Where you want to go/are going Step 2: Make a Vision Statement with the direction in mind A Mission statement too Step 3: Evaluate your current assets and resources Not just hardware and software, people too Step 4: Determine any Needs Assessments Training can be critical, then equipment Step 5: Plan goals/objectives
Process Description Step 6: Determine Professional Development programs Step 7: Determine a Budget Step 8: Make an Implementation Timeline Step 9: Evaluation of first implementation and feedback loop Step 10: Conduct an Ongoing Evaluation of the Technology Plan
U.S. 15-years-olds score below 16 other OECD countries

Vision Statement (draft for committee) Focus on learning, then equipment. Creating an environment to meeting the learning needs of the learner of tomorrow today by teaching life-long learning skills for the 21st century with student centered learning from K to 6th grade at Simon Hill Elementary School with technology and sound instruction methods. Through the use of highly qualified teachers, an involved community, strong families, in a safe environment for learning with an efficient staff with the right technology tools to enhance and increase student achievements. The students of Simon Hill to graduate to the middle school with skill levels to meet the standards for ISITS 7th graders or above.

Plan Goals/Objectives The progress of any change effort is ultimately dependent on not only the eager and willing teachers and staff but also those who are not so eager. The two groups must work together to transform anxiety to proficiency and proficiency to mastery. The problem is exacerbated when “teachers who are lacking skills are afraid to ask for help,” observed one participant.
Plan Goals/Objectives cont. Instead of thinking in the short term, both administrators and teachers must look at the bigger picture. Although this at first seems difficult, creating a clear vision for learning and setting measurable educational goals is one of the keys to success. Professional development tends to have a stronger impact when we frame it like this: “Let’s look at what students are learning this year and then see how technology can make it more effective.”
Plan Goals/Objectives Indicators of Success: Maximize content learning of the elementary students at Simon Hill, quality of student product improvement Methods/Measures: Standardized tests-ISATS, IRI, ISITS, NETS, Rubrics for scoring student products, employee surveys, Interviews, Observations Benchmarks: Establish baselines, Review of student products to show improvement from baselines, 15% or more score at proficient or above after baseline retesting
Plan Goals/Objectives cont. Benchmarks, cont. 40% of students score satisfactory or above on product rubrics by mid-year; 70% of students score satisfactory or above on product by the end of the year. Evaluation Findings: Determine if there are barriers to the implementation process Use results to inform staff of development planning Interview certified and classified teachers for feedback on training and enhanced student learning Make informed decisions about instructional practices
Plan Goals/Objectives cont. Increase the number of highly effective and qualified personnel Strategy 1: Implement an effective professional development system and instructional framework to enable every Simon Hill staff member to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviors to improve learning for all students Strategy 2: Principal and Simon Hill staff will continue to collaboratively support teachers’ instructional practices toward improved student learning with time and funding Strategy 3: Recruit, develop, and retain the highest quality teachers and Simon Hill staff Increase parent/family/community partnerships that support the education of all students Strategy 4: Identify needs and provide opportunities for parents to actively participate in school
Plan Goals/Objectives cont. Strategy 5: Communicate to parents the educational goals of their children Integrate a technologically-enhanced educational environment and support system that promotes student learning and overall efficiency and effectiveness of school operations Strategy 6: Provide network administration services, maintenance, safe access, to support student learning Strategy 7: Integration of technology in the classroom that supports 21st century learning skills Strategy 8: Maintain ongoing efforts to improve communication via the school website to support the academic efforts of students
Needs Assessment Does technology training for classified personnel enhance student learning? What impact does technology training for classified personnel have to enhance student learning? See Exhibit of Survey of Needs Assessment for Teachers Certified/Classified Does the committee want a survey for other stakeholders? Parents, community, staff, etc…
Staff Development Incentives from the Principal Rewards for successful individual and group efforts Tie merit into the vision and goals of the overall school plan and use of technology in enhancing student learning Match training with feedback from the survey from the teachers to their interests and needs (andragogy)
Staff Development cont. Take pride in their professional training Role Model professional development for the students “a personal journey of growth and discovery”, by Jamie McKenzie Learn by daily use and ‘just doing it’ Encourage each other to remove obstacles Collective teacher support groups Envision success daily for each other picture " Ó 1998 Microsoft Corporation. • 5.
  • 8. Process Description Step 6: Determine Professional Development programs Step 7: Determine a Budget Step 8: Make an Implementation Timeline Step 9: Evaluation of first implementation and feedback loop Step 10: Conduct an Ongoing Evaluation of the Technology Plan

Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome everyone, thank your for taking your time to be here and participate! You are the committee that will make this a success, I’m here to provide support and facilitate the first meeting with an outline for you to fill in and make this a reality that will work for all of you.
  2. I never see what has been done; I only see what remains to be done. There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.
  3. Technology today is fast paced and changing rapidly. Employers will demand more of the future generation and they want more from us adults already!
  4. The top ten steps to plan a tech use plan. Yes, you heard right! To plan a plan. As this is your document, feel free to add steps as needed as we proceed down this river journey together.
  5. It is important as step #9 and 10 to keep an on-going evaluation, reflection and change period in each cycle so as to always be aware of the implementation and needs of the learners, teachers and other stakeholders in this group that we represent.
  6. Some food for thought as we journey together: this study shows 15yrs olds in the US scored below 16 other countries in science literacy in 2006. How do you think this will affect our children’s ability to compete for jobs in a global economy?
  7. Those who graduate from high school earn more than those who do not and those with college degrees even more.
  8. Here is a draft to get you started as a committee on one of the most important aspects of today. To develop Simon Hill’s Vision Statement. I’ve put together some ideas for you to think about and we can discuss them more after the rest of the slides. I’ll turn the meeting over to Principal Miss Moffett for conducting the Vision statement planning at that time.
  9. Capacity to use tech score a failing grade and the next slide shows why

  14. What needs should be addressed in the assessment instrument? Provide a list of the general areas to be assessed. Link to your online survey.
  15. Provide some suggestions for staff development as this will be such a crucial element in the plan - and one that you, as the educational technologist will spearhead.
  16. Suggest how you would evaluate the plan - how will that be structured? Who? How will unmet goals be addressed? Will there be a research component? What measure will be used to determine success?
  17. Celebrate success
  18. When the river boat lands and the party is over, everyone is free to go ashore!
