4. SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDE TO MAKING SXSW A SUCCESS
Getting Ready To Go
You might think the action doesn’t really start until you arrive in Austin,
but social media presents you with opportunities long before you step
off the plane. Knowing when and how to use your social channels
effectively is one of your most valuable assets when it comes to
preparing for SXSW. Here are some points to consider before you go.
Make sure your social media profiles are up to date
Put your best social media face forward. Upload a professional, clear, and friendly headshot of yourself
as your LinkedIn and/or Twitter profile photo. Not only does it look more professional but it will make it
easier for other attendees to make the connection between your online and offline self. Also, make sure
your social profiles are complete and have your most current public information, including your full name,
employer, and where you’re from (Country at minimum, but State and/or City are more helpful). Your
SXSW badge will have your photo and, potentially, social account information, so you don’t want to lead
people to an out-of-date destination. Feel free to include some personal tidbits about yourself to give
people an idea of your personality and hopefully make them more inclined to want to connect with you.
Amanda Nelson, our content manager, has one sentence for her Twitter profile but it says a lot about her.
