How we access and interface with urban data.
Small group of Japanese computer enthusiast.
What we DON’T think Street computing is
We are bathed in sea of data
Some is readily accessible , other we can’t see yet
Publicly accessible data. Not provided on proprietary websites, but through re-usable data formats. Developers are encouraged to use the data (e.g. mashup Australia). Some are static (public toilet list), but some are dynamic (NSW fire incidents)
Different types of data sources: Public info & social / crowds
Sensor data
Open source platforms Arduino
Pachube
How do I find the information I need
How do we access city information.
How do we combine information on the fly?
How do we task the city?
Old-style interfaces
Dedicated web-services and mobile services
Serve one particular purpose
Not tailored to my needs
Our goal / vision
3 different layers
Collecting data like things in your handbag
Composing / mashing up
The urban substrate, collect and mediate all sorts of data, a bit like pachube
Including social data
Situated - context within which a data element was captured
Physical or tanbigle composition
User-centred: Our user studies
Own bespoke decision-support applications. Build your own!
Problems in Human-Computer Interaction within the urban domain
How to expose digital information to ordinary people in the physical world
How to enable ordinary people to combine this information in a manner that is personally/socially meaningful to them
Personal transport
Distribution of urban data (councils, companies)
Communities and civic sensor networks
Open social standards for urban information
Food consumption, lifestyle change and persuasive technologies
