To whom it may concern:
I am delighted to be writing a letter of recommendation for Maria Guryeva who was my student
during the 2012 Spring Term in the Advanced Academic Writing Class at Columbia University.
Maria is prepared for rigorous academic work due to her participation in class, positive attitude, and
strong writing skills.
During her time as my student, Maria came to class every day with a smile on her face; interacting
in a respectful manner with every one of her classmates. Many of those classmates looked forward
to working with her on group assignments. Maria also regularly volunteered answers in class-wide
discussions and asked helpful questions about readings and writing assignments. Additionally
Maria participated frequently in giving her classmates feedback during the peer feedback phase of
their writing assignments.
Maria has a unique perspective, drawing on her own life experiences, and writes with a clear voice.
She often came up with creative perspectives on, or solutions to, issues discussed in class. Her
linguistic accuracy improved a lot over the course of her semester with me and she clearly
understands which errors she most needs to watch out for. Her linguistic complexity is also
impressive; she writes with many different sentence structures and an advanced vocabulary.
Maria is a delight to have in the classroom and her papers are wonderful to read. She will succeed
in any academic discipline that she chooses and her teachers will be lucky to have her as a student.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Imy Berry
