Introduction
La realizzazione del nuovo Centro ospedaliero di riabilitazione in Firenze è ormai una realtà e con essa si
apre una fase nuova ed entusiasmante della presenza della Fondazione Don Gnocchi nello scenario
sanitario e assistenziale dell’area fiorentina.
Ancora una volta, la risposta della “Don Gnocchi” ai bisogni di salute del territorio - nel settore della
riabilitazione - è una risposta forte, significativa e impegnativa, nella convinzione che l’apporto di strutture,
strumenti e modalità operative moderne possa essere coerente con la progressione della ricerca
scientifica e tecnologica e, al medesimo tempo, avere una ricaduta concreta e migliorativa in termini di
qualità dell’assistenza.
L’originalità e la complessità strutturale ed organizzativa dell’intervento fanno del nuovo polo riabilitativo
una struttura all’avanguardia nel panorama della riabilitazione ospedaliera regionale e nazionale, oltre che
una struttura urbana fra le più significative del territorio, integrata nel tessuto metropolitano della città di
Firenze, luogo per un’esperienza di recupero completa e di altro profilo scientifico. Una realizzazione che è
un punto di arrivo e nel contempo un punto di partenza di un nuovo cammino, indirizzato verso mete ancor
più prestigiose, in piena coerenza con la storia e con l’esperienza di cura e di assistenza, di ricerca e di
formazione maturata nei quasi 60 anni di vita e di storia della Fondazione Don Gnocchi.
La sfida di questo progetto, nuovo per qualità progettuale complessiva, per coerenza con i programmi di
attività programmatoria sanitaria e per flessibilità, va ben oltre la pur necessaria esigenza di
riqualificazione dei fattori strutturali, ormai incompatibili con una moderna medicina riabilitativa. Questo
aggiornamento va di pari passo con il rinnovamento dei sistemi organizzativi e di governo delle strutture
che erogano le prestazioni. Dopo tanti anni si può ben dire che la Fondazione Don Gnocchi ha dato prova
di questa capacità di adeguamento, intesa come abilità nel saper adeguare nel tempo i programmi e le
scelte assistenziali alle trasformazioni della società, delle scienze mediche delle tecnologie, dell’evoluzione
normativa, dimostrando un dinamismo funzionale che ben si adatta al ruolo che ricopre nel contesto
assistenziale di riferimento. In questa ottica, il progetto del nuovo IRCCS di Firenze potrà rappresentare la
strada più lusinghiera per alimentare il sogno del nostro fondatore. Un segno tangibile di una continuità
che è unica, come unico ed esclusivo fu il sogno del beato don Gnocchi, che nel lontano - ma ancor
vicinissimo - 1951 ebbe la forza, la determinazione e la lucidità di “esportare” in un piccolo borgo di terra
toscana una straordinaria ragione di vita.

Introduction
The construction of the new hospital rehabilitation center in Florence is now a reality and it brings up a new
and exciting phase in the presence of the Don Gnocchi Foundation in setting health and welfare of the
Florentine Area.
Again, the response of "Don Gnocchi" to the health needs of the territory - in the field of rehabilitation - is a
strong, meaningful and challenging, in the belief that the provision of facilities, tools and modern ways of
operating may be in accordance on one hand with the progress of science and technology and on the
other hand an concrete effect translate in better terms of quality of care.
The originality and the structural and organizational of the project about the new rehabilitation center is a
cutting edge of regional and national rehabilitation hospitals as well as an urban structure of the most
significant of the region, integrated into the urban fabric of the city of Florence, the hospital will be a
structure to experience full recovery and other scientific perspective. A realization that is a goal and at the
same time a starting point for a new way, goals directed toward more prestigious, fully in keeping with the
history and experience of care and treatment, research and training experience in almost 60 years of life
and history of the Don Gnocchi Foundation.
The challenge of this project, new to the overall design quality, is in line with health and flexibility business
plans but goes far beyond the need for necessary upgrading of structural factors, now incompatible with a
modern rehabilitation medicine. This update goes hand in hand with the renewal of organizational systems
and governance structures that deliver performance. After so many years we can say that the Don Gnocchi
Foundation has given proof of this adaptability, understood as skills in being able to adapt over time,
welfare programs and choices to changes in society, medical sciences, technologies, regulatory
developments, demonstrating a functional dynamism that is suitable for their role in the context of health
care reference. In this context, the design of new IRCCS Florence will be the most flattering way to feed
the dream of our founder. A tangible sign of a continuity that is unique, as unique and exclusive was the
dream of Blessed Don Gnocchi, who way back in - but still very close - 1951 had the strength,
determination and clarity to "export" in a small village land Tuscany a unique way of life.
