Recognising excellence among the region’s key financial institutions
The Banker Middle East Industry Awards 2013 mark another year of success for the region’s banks
and finance houses as MENA region economies continue to build a solid foundation for the future.
(Dubai – 19 June, 2013) – More than 450 top financiers from around the MENA region attended a
Gala dinner held at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers in Dubai where the winners of the 14th annual
Banker Middle East Industry Awards were revealed.
The peer-voted awards were dominated by institutions active in the UAE, taking 32 out of the 50
awards in this section. However, the top accolade of Best Bank in the Middle East went, for the third
year running, to Qatar National Bank.
Sponsored by Union BancairePrivee, the Awards were partnered by Hawkamah, the Institute for
Corporate Governance. The ceremony also played host to the 2013 Hawkamah Bank Corporate
Governance Awards.
CPI Financial’s own commitment to increasing transparency in the awards process saw a total of 18
awards going to banking institutions in nine countries1
as a result of straightforward analysis of
financial reports.
“Our partnership with Hawkamah for the second year in a row underlines our own commitment to
transparency and understandable methodology for our awards. Analysis of financial performance
based on institutions’ own published figures offers clear and unarguable relative performance data
for the region’s banks,” said Adam Broom, Chief Executive Officer of CPI Financial.
Compiled as the CPI Financial 100, this research, now in its fourth year, is calculated using banks’
own published financial metrics. The top 100 banks in the Middle East controlled assets worth $1.66
trillion, up from $1.47 trillion the previous year and together made aggregate net profits of $26.94
billion in 2012, rising 5.3 per cent on the previous year.
TheBanker Middle East Industry Awards recognise both corporate and individual distinctions
amongst top performers in the industry. Acknowledging the contribution of individuals to the
regional industry, Mohammed Abdulla Alqubaisi, Chairman of Finance House, was honoured with
the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’; Steve Troop, Group Chief Executive Officer of Barwa Bank was
named ‘Banker of the Year’.
“The Banker Middle East Industry Awards set the benchmark for the MENA financial sector. Our
commitment to raising the bar in the quality of our Awards process ensures that we will continue to
do so,”said Robin Amlôt, Managing Editor of CPI Financial.“We are very proud to be able to honour
