- Employers have very little time to shuffle through multiple pages attached to one applicant. It is the industry standard in the professional career fields. And most importantly is it eco-friendly, cutting down on loose office paper. Digitial and Electronic resumes are also acceptable.
- On the resume at the bottom include (references included). Always come to interviews with references but only supply them if the employer asks or it is previously stated.
- My portfolio review allowed me to meet in a professional atmosphere with professors critiquing my work. It allowed students to get honest and helpful information about how to better there portfolio. Unlike older employers and companies may not be as tech savy as younger graduates. For this reason, Dr. Pam advised me that I should include my knowledge of social media sites to increase my attractiveness to employers.
- In a professional setting purses are not necessary. Tuck whatever important belongings you have in the portfolio case to minimize baggage. Invest in a good briefcase or shoulder bag.
- Women applying for jobs should wear minimal jewelry, and make up. Pants are best advised but if not then stockings if wearing a skirt. Light on the perfume and low cut revealing tops. Suit jackets are also encouraged.
- There are thousands of professionals withLinkedin profiles across the world. It is a way for employers to seek applicants and professionals to network in a secure setting. Partnerships and business relationships are formed without ever physically meeting a person. I still visit my site, without this class I might not have sought to make my own account. But now that I have I feel ahead of the game as an applicant.
- Unlike Linkedin, PR OpenMic is geared towards public relations professionals. With links to blogs, chats, forums, photos, videos, and jobs/interns. It serves as the largest social networking site for professionals in this field.
- Before taking this class I had a twitter account but I was not a daily user. But knowing that Professor Nixon posted helpful information to her twitter page about class or public relations drew my attention to it more. I noticed that every professional in the field I wanted to be in entertainment had a Twitter. She also supplied helpful hints or how-to lessons, which were helpful.
- After showing your portfolio leave potential employers with one or two examples of your best work. Most employers do not want your entire work. This will back up your resume and interview with detailed examples of your work.
