 The video clip that I have chosen to analyse is
‘In the morning’ by Razorlite. I have chosen to
use this as I like the way the video uses the
same scenario and setting all the way through,
this could be an appropriate choice for my
video, also due to the failure of the first song,
this is the type of music we will need to make a
music video for. The storyline is quirky and
shows the band playing on stage, which is how
the video opens, but then as the video follows
it shows different younger people, that were
originally frozen in position, unfreezing and
dancing in an odd way. The positions they
were froze in refers to the previous night, such
as a man being carried out by a bouncer,
therefore relating the song ‘in the morning’.
 The scene opens with a man stood
frozen still with a sheet over his head, this
is to make the audience interested as to
why he has a sheet over his head, an
unconventional pose. Therefore when
the lever is turned and the sheets are
removed it draws your attention further
to the items beneath it, the first items
shown being the drums, and making you
aware the song is about to begin.
 The scene is set in a vintage style
bar/club. This is so that the previous
nights events can be shown through.
However, by using a vintage style bar, it
differentiates itself from many different
music videos of people dancing in a
bar/club, this is usually a different genre
of music altogether.
 The band are playing on a stage, with
the dancers around them. This is the
obvious and conventional style for a
vintage bar, and to have the dancers
looking at them, like you would if you
went out for the night and there was a
band playing, therefore again referring
to the night before.
 At the height of the song there is disco lights. This emphasises the song but also relates
to the night before again, when it would have been night, and as the video goes
further on, it becomes more and more like the night previous.
 Also by using disco lights, it shows off more of the unusual dancers,
 Lighting is also used when it changes from light to dark, which some could interpret as
the change from morning to night, again referring to the song.
 The males face seems confused when
he begins to dance, as though he
cannot control his body. This again refers
to the night before as he would have
been in a state where he was unsure of
what he was doing, therefore it is
supposed to be similar to the night
before’s events with his sober ‘morning
mind’. This is the theme that runs
throughout the video.
 The clothes worn in the video are stereotypically the
clothes worn expected by the genre of music ‘indie’. This is
a point that I need to feature in my own music video in
order to emphasise the genre and make it appeal to my
target audience.
 In the video the band are wearing skinny jeans, with there
long sleeved/ ¾ length sleeved tops. These are traditional
clothes to be worn by indie groups and the dancers follow
the same style. The female dancers wear a style of indie
dress, and all the clothes are in neutral colours to blend
with the neutral colours of the bar and make the dancing
and the singing stand out.
 They also tend to have the typical ‘indie cut’ with longer
messy style hair which again relates to their genre of
music.
 Camera is used to emphasise the use of
mise-en scene in order to create more of
an atmosphere.
 The video begins with an establishing
shot, showing the people hidden
beneath the sheets and leave us
questioning as to why.
 A medium shot is then used to show a
lever on a wooden panelled wall. Most
of the shots before the music begins
seem like random cuts that jump from
different objects within the scene,
therefore it continues and jumps to a
close up shot showing of the lever which
means that the lever will be used and
focuses the audiences attention on it.
 An over the shoulder shot is used behind
the main dancer towards the start of the
video, it is in view of the band, this is to
make the audience feel like they are
part of the audience that would have
been dancing in the crowd the night
previously and therefore they will feel
involved and want to continue watching
the rest of the video, this is an idea that I
will put forward in my video.
 A birds eye shot is used to show two
characters frozen into position as though
they are ready to kiss each other. This
again relates to the night previously in
which they would have no doubt been
kissing each other, and also gives us an
insight to previous events.
 An extreme close up is used on the
young mans eyes when he begins the
dance. This emphasises his confusion on
the reason for his dancing. It also
highlights his emotions in which we might
not have noticed had it not been for the
shot.
 A zoom out shot is used to show all of the
characters dancing together. This
therefore focuses our attention on the
dancers and brings them all into focus.
 Editing is used to cut between the
camera shots; this creates a mood
towards the camera, as the camera
would towards the mise en scene.
 Lots of jump cuts are used to join the
scene together, this separates the
different sections of the scene and also
separates the band from the actors.
 It also makes the video look much more
messy, like the stereotypical indie genre
 Continuity editing is used to make the
video look fluent and make it obvious it is
all set within the same time zone.
 A freeze cut is used, when many of the
characters are still before moving into their
role. This again gives a further impression of
the night previous.
 Also a freeze cut changes in the changes of
music and therefore relates to the songs.
 Continuity editing is often used in areas
where we are not to notice a seam in
the video.
 The sound is used to often match the
scenes and emphasise what is going on,
however obviously this is a music video,
and in this case the scenes are used to
match the music and to emphasise the
lyrics and music.
 The title of the song is ‘in the morning’
with the main lyric running through being
‘in the morning, you know we won’t
remember a thing’. The video relates to
this when the dancers are unsure of what
they are doing or how they got there,
they “don’t remember”, directly relating
to the song lyric.
 Heightened diegetics are used in the opening of the
video when the sound of the lever being turned is
emphasised, this is to signify the music is about to start,
after showing many establishing shots.
 It also stands out against the silence otherwise, this is
unconventional in a music video as obviously the
audience would expect continuous music from the
start. This is a potential idea for my music video as it is
original and makes the actual music more enjoyable
when the music starts playing.
 The song begins with heavy drum beats,
in the video, a chair falls as soon as the
drums start, this creates more of an
impact of the drums but also relates to
the music kickstarting the video.
 Wires are used and then edited out in
this video in order to make the dancing
seem more strange and unreal. This
therefore makes it appear that it is not a
regular dance video.

  • 1.
  • 2.  The video clip that I have chosen to analyse is ‘In the morning’ by Razorlite. I have chosen to use this as I like the way the video uses the same scenario and setting all the way through, this could be an appropriate choice for my video, also due to the failure of the first song, this is the type of music we will need to make a music video for. The storyline is quirky and shows the band playing on stage, which is how the video opens, but then as the video follows it shows different younger people, that were originally frozen in position, unfreezing and dancing in an odd way. The positions they were froze in refers to the previous night, such as a man being carried out by a bouncer, therefore relating the song ‘in the morning’.
  • 3.  The scene opens with a man stood frozen still with a sheet over his head, this is to make the audience interested as to why he has a sheet over his head, an unconventional pose. Therefore when the lever is turned and the sheets are removed it draws your attention further to the items beneath it, the first items shown being the drums, and making you aware the song is about to begin.
  • 4.  The scene is set in a vintage style bar/club. This is so that the previous nights events can be shown through. However, by using a vintage style bar, it differentiates itself from many different music videos of people dancing in a bar/club, this is usually a different genre of music altogether.
  • 5.  The band are playing on a stage, with the dancers around them. This is the obvious and conventional style for a vintage bar, and to have the dancers looking at them, like you would if you went out for the night and there was a band playing, therefore again referring to the night before.
  • 6.  At the height of the song there is disco lights. This emphasises the song but also relates to the night before again, when it would have been night, and as the video goes further on, it becomes more and more like the night previous.  Also by using disco lights, it shows off more of the unusual dancers,  Lighting is also used when it changes from light to dark, which some could interpret as the change from morning to night, again referring to the song.
  • 7.  The males face seems confused when he begins to dance, as though he cannot control his body. This again refers to the night before as he would have been in a state where he was unsure of what he was doing, therefore it is supposed to be similar to the night before’s events with his sober ‘morning mind’. This is the theme that runs throughout the video.
  • 8.  The clothes worn in the video are stereotypically the clothes worn expected by the genre of music ‘indie’. This is a point that I need to feature in my own music video in order to emphasise the genre and make it appeal to my target audience.  In the video the band are wearing skinny jeans, with there long sleeved/ ¾ length sleeved tops. These are traditional clothes to be worn by indie groups and the dancers follow the same style. The female dancers wear a style of indie dress, and all the clothes are in neutral colours to blend with the neutral colours of the bar and make the dancing and the singing stand out.  They also tend to have the typical ‘indie cut’ with longer messy style hair which again relates to their genre of music.
  • 9.  Camera is used to emphasise the use of mise-en scene in order to create more of an atmosphere.
  • 10.  The video begins with an establishing shot, showing the people hidden beneath the sheets and leave us questioning as to why.
  • 11.  A medium shot is then used to show a lever on a wooden panelled wall. Most of the shots before the music begins seem like random cuts that jump from different objects within the scene, therefore it continues and jumps to a close up shot showing of the lever which means that the lever will be used and focuses the audiences attention on it.
  • 12.  An over the shoulder shot is used behind the main dancer towards the start of the video, it is in view of the band, this is to make the audience feel like they are part of the audience that would have been dancing in the crowd the night previously and therefore they will feel involved and want to continue watching the rest of the video, this is an idea that I will put forward in my video.
  • 13.  A birds eye shot is used to show two characters frozen into position as though they are ready to kiss each other. This again relates to the night previously in which they would have no doubt been kissing each other, and also gives us an insight to previous events.
  • 14.  An extreme close up is used on the young mans eyes when he begins the dance. This emphasises his confusion on the reason for his dancing. It also highlights his emotions in which we might not have noticed had it not been for the shot.
  • 15.  A zoom out shot is used to show all of the characters dancing together. This therefore focuses our attention on the dancers and brings them all into focus.
  • 16.  Editing is used to cut between the camera shots; this creates a mood towards the camera, as the camera would towards the mise en scene.
  • 17.  Lots of jump cuts are used to join the scene together, this separates the different sections of the scene and also separates the band from the actors.  It also makes the video look much more messy, like the stereotypical indie genre
  • 18.  Continuity editing is used to make the video look fluent and make it obvious it is all set within the same time zone.
  • 19.  A freeze cut is used, when many of the characters are still before moving into their role. This again gives a further impression of the night previous.  Also a freeze cut changes in the changes of music and therefore relates to the songs.
  • 20.  Continuity editing is often used in areas where we are not to notice a seam in the video.
  • 21.  The sound is used to often match the scenes and emphasise what is going on, however obviously this is a music video, and in this case the scenes are used to match the music and to emphasise the lyrics and music.
  • 22.  The title of the song is ‘in the morning’ with the main lyric running through being ‘in the morning, you know we won’t remember a thing’. The video relates to this when the dancers are unsure of what they are doing or how they got there, they “don’t remember”, directly relating to the song lyric.
  • 23.  Heightened diegetics are used in the opening of the video when the sound of the lever being turned is emphasised, this is to signify the music is about to start, after showing many establishing shots.  It also stands out against the silence otherwise, this is unconventional in a music video as obviously the audience would expect continuous music from the start. This is a potential idea for my music video as it is original and makes the actual music more enjoyable when the music starts playing.
  • 24.  The song begins with heavy drum beats, in the video, a chair falls as soon as the drums start, this creates more of an impact of the drums but also relates to the music kickstarting the video.
  • 25.  Wires are used and then edited out in this video in order to make the dancing seem more strange and unreal. This therefore makes it appear that it is not a regular dance video.
