Finding “Descriptive Video
Service” DVDs in the Manchester
   City Library Search Engine

    TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
       MANCHESTER CITY LIBRARY
                12/12/12
What is Descriptive Video Service (DVS)?

 Makes visual media, such as television programs,
feature films, and home videos, more accessible to
people who are blind or otherwise visually impaired.
 DVS is an option that can be activated on many of
the DVDs the library provides access to.
How do I find DVS materials using the library search
                       engine?

Visit the MCL
search engine
http://bit.ly/SRbnX7

• From the “Quick Search”
screen, type in the words
“video recordings for
people with visual
disabilities” and then click
on the “anywhere”
button.”
• This search brings
back 255 titles
Other Search Options

You can also do this
search from the
“keyword” screen. In
the “Search by” field
select “Subject.” In the
“Limit by” field select
“DVD.”
DVS information in a DVD record

 The subject heading we used to find DVS titles is
noted in the record for the DVD.
 It can be found under “Subjects”
Saving Your Search

 The library search engine has the ability to run a
DVS search for you on a weekly basis and then email
  you the results.
 This is a great way to stay current on the newest
  materials.
Saved Search: Step 1

 Sign-in to your account by entering your library card
  number and password.
 To get to this screen click on “My Account” >> “My
  Record”
Saved Search: Step 2

 Run the search as described in the earlier slides of
  this presentation.
 Click on “Save Search”
Saved Search: Step 3

 Enter a name for the search and click on “Save
 Search.”
Saved Search: Step 4

 You can find all of your saved searches under “My
 Account” >> “Saved Searches.”
Future Improvements to the System

 To make searching more intuitive, and closer to the
way people speak and write, the library will be
adding the term “Descriptive Video Service” as a
subject heading to future DVDs that have this
  functionality.
 This will allow the public to search on this well
known phrase to make it easier to find DVS
  materials.
Creating Lists of DVS Titles

 The search engine easily allows you to create
  personalized lists.
 Get started by signing-in to the system and running
  the search as described before.
Creating DVS Lists

 When you see a title you like click on the “Add to My
 List” link
Creating DVS Lists

 Add the selected title to your desired list. You can
have as many lists as you want!
Creating DVS Lists

 You can view lists under “My Account”
That’s All for Now!

 Contact David Smolen, Head of Technical Services,
 at 624-6550 x343 or dsmolen@manchesternh.gov
 with any questions.
