2. Skimming Running your eyes quickly over the text, to get general information about the whole text. Look for: Key words Visual features Headings and subheadings Lists or bullet points Any words that stand out (italics, bold, font) Words or abbreviations you don’t know
3. After Skimming Think! What do I already know about this topic? What kind of info am I likely to find here? This is called Activating Prior Knowledge
4. Scanning Going through the text for particular pieces of information, paying closer attention to the sections where you expect to find the info you need. Look for: Main points of different sections (usually in the first sentence) Key words in a paragraph
5. After Skimming and Scanning You should be able to answer: What type of text is this? (non-fiction article? News report? Medical information?) What is the main purpose of the article (persuade? Inform? Question?) What is the main subject? Who is the intended audience? What sort of information will I find in this text?
