&
INDIA TODAY
Dr. Md. Afsar Ali
Assistant Professor

2. What is ‘HINDUSTA’
(i.e.INDIA)?
The ward ‘Hindu’ denotes a geographical
definition & refers to the group of people living
besides the river Sindhu. According to the
Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics, Vol. 6, Ref.
No. 699, the ward ‘Hindu’ is not found before
the advent of Muslims in India and according to
Pandit Nehru (Discovery of India, Page No. 74-
75) the ward ‘Hindu’ was first used by a Tantrik
in 8th Century A.D. to describe the people.
So, ‘HINDUSTA’ refers to the place besides the
river Sindhu.
3. What is meant by ‘HAMARA’
(i.e., OURS) ?
According to the great poet Rabindra Nath
Thakur – A country is not made of its LAND
but by its PEOPLE.
Let us analyze the composition of
POPULATION (‘HAMARA’ element) in our
great country :
5. Indian Population :
There are a total of 2,800 castes ; out of
which -
SC = 450 castes,
ST = 461 castes,
BC = 766 castes.
Ref : ‘People of India’ , a publication of ASI, Govt.
of India, under the leadership of K.S.Singh
(IAS).
Note : Here ‘caste’ means ‘ethnic identity’.
6. India as nation :
‘INDIA is not a “NATION” but a group
of hundreds of conflicting
nationalities governed by a small
ruling class.’
[Ref.: ‘Caste – a nation within the
nation’ – V. T. Rajshekar]
7. Democracy & Nationality :
“If democracy means representation,
then why and how it partitioned India
instead of strengthening her unity and
integrity ? And why and how that
process is continuing even today ? – I
have to raise this question with great
agony and justifiable reason.”
Ref: Jaswant Singh, ‘Jinnah : India – Partition –
Independence’, Page : 200 – 201.
8. True Democracy :
‘H. M. Sirbhai said, “Democracy does not
means the Government formed ony by the
majority party, democracy means the rule
based on the consent of the larger community.
The theory which is based only on number,
can’t prevent the supremacy of the majority on
the minority ; the Government can’t provide
the opportunity to the minority for expressing
their opinion and even can’t manage to show
proper respect to them”.
Ref: Jaswant Singh, ‘Jinnah : India – Partition –
Independence’, Page : 311.
9. Improper Counting :
Indian Census counts SC, ST & BC population
under the Hindu fold.
Dr. Ambedkar said : “Untouchables are not
Hindu but a separate element”– DSA – 2000.
Dr. Ambedkar converted to Buddhism [14th
Oct. 1956] and hence brought the religious
identity to the SC, ST & BC population as ‘Neo –
Buddhist’, which many of them do not know.
