3. Within the medium shot, the use of the red pipe relates to Charles Peirce’s
theory that we think only in signs because the colour red connotates
danger. This sign gives the meaning to the audience that drugs are
dangerous.
Also within the mise-en-scene, the character Kid Ink is wearing black. This
relates to Peirce’s theory because the colour black connotates power. This
gives the meaning that the colour is re enforcing his position in the video,
as a dominant character yet it is also re-enforcing his status as a rapper.
4. The use of the costume that Chris Brown is wearing relates to Peirce’s
theory because the use of the colour blue connotates confidence. This
gives the meaning that Chris Browns character is confident because his
outfit is re enforcing his personality.
Also the use of the gold chain accessory he is wearing gives the meaning
that he is wealthy because gold connotates wealth.
5. Within the establishing shot, the mise-en-scene shows the womens characters
costumes, which are all black and white. This relates the Charles’ theory because
the colour black connotates power and the colour white connotates innocence.
This could give the meaning that the female characters have 2 split personalities (
powerful when they are out with their friends, and innocent when they are at home).
6. Within the establishing shot, the sign is the lights, which make the
atmosphere look orange. This relates to Charles’ theory because the
connotation of orange is joy because orange is combined with red and
yellow which connotates happiness and energy. This gives the meaning that
the atmosphere at the party is joyful because everyone is happy and giving
off lots of energy because they are drunk and dancing.
7. Nothing is a sign unless it is interpreted
as a sign” (Peirce, 1931).
8. The use of black is interpretates as a sign because the use of black connotates
dominance and power. This is a familiar convention of the colour black and it re
enforces the meaning that Kid Ink is a powerful and dominant character
throughout the music video.
9. The use of the gold chain in the mise en scene is interpretates as a sign because
the use of the colour gold connotates wealth, therefore the gold chain accessory
gives the meaning that the character is wealthy and successful.
10. Ferdinand de Saussure (1974)
a 'signifier' (signifiant) - the form which the
sign takes;
and the 'signified' (signifié) - the concept it
represents
11. The signified of this establishing shot, is that the 3 males are sat on
a couch. The signifier of this establishing shot is that the male in the
centre is dominant because he is central in the frame and the use of
the black costume he is wearing connotates power. Therefore
portraying him as the dominant character in this shot.
12. The use of the orange light in the establishing shot is the signified. The signifier
is the orange light connotates joy because the colour combines energy (red)
and happiness (yellow). This gives the meaning that the atmosphere of the
video is joyful because everyone is having fun dancing.
13. Within the mise en scene of the establishing shot, the signified is the gold
necklace, watch and top. The signifier of these is that the colour gold
connotates wealth, therefore the meaning of the accessories is that it
portrays the character as wealthy and successful.
14. Charles Sanders Pierce (1931) – Three
types of sign...
Icon/iconic: a mode in which the signifier is
perceived as resembling or imitating the
signified (recognizably looking, sounding,
feeling, tasting or smelling like it) - being
similar in possessing some of its qualities
15. The Show Me video relates to Charles’ theory because the iconic sign is
shown because the use of black costume resembles the signifier because
it looks like the signified. Black connotes power therefore it looks like she
is resembling that power because she is dominating the male in the frame
because she is towering over him and she is central.
16. Index/indexical: a mode in which the signifier is
not arbitrary but is directly connected in some
way (physically or causally) to the signified - this
link can be observed or inferred
17. The index sign is used within the Show me video because the use of the
watch (signified) is linked to time (signifier). It is not directly connected to
the signified but it can be linked by observing the watch, which infers the
connotation of time.
18. Symbol/symbolic: a mode in which the
signifier does not resemble the signified but
which is fundamentally arbitrary or purely
conventional - so that the relationship must
be learnt:
19. The symbolic sign is used within the Show me video because the lyrics ‘you
remind me of something, I don't know what it is, but right now you got to show
me’ are lip sung in the mise-en-scene by Chris Brown. This brings in the aspect
of performance, which is a typical convention of the music video form.
