Audience Feedback
At the beginning of our project we asked a series of questions to some students, all of whom we knew liked The Coral, via our blogs and Facebook. This initial feedback helped us to understand what aspects of The Coral’s products particularly appealed to the fans, and what they would be looking for in our Coral product. http://betha2media.blogspot.com/2010/09/student-surveys.html Student Surveys
We learned that fans enjoyed The Coral’s “individual sound” and thought their music was “easy listening”and “catchy”. This helped us to imagine a typical Coral fan as a casual, care-free person. They thought that The Coral’s typical fans were “people who are less into mainstream music” which indicated to us that the look for our video would therefore need to move away from mainstream music videos as well. Student Surveys
We asked our interviewees what they would like to see on the next Coral album cover, to which they responded “bright colours, eye catching fonts” and “random images”which we achieved by including our bear character in various locations, and using the same font as The Coral in our digipak and advert. They also referred to some of the previous Coral albums which features “bright swirls”and “psychedelic”and “hand drawn images”which we thought would be too complicated and time consuming, and perhaps one album too far to use this style again. Student Surveys
Our interviewees thought that The Coral’s videos were “strange but in a good way” when the band were acting as “just themselves”. We learned that their style doesn’t appeal to everyone, as one person responded “it was really weird. Didn’t really like it”, which helped us to decide to tone down the surrealism of typical Coral videos and add more of a narrative to our video. Student Surveys
In terms of where to set our video, most of our responses said they enjoyed the “typical British”feel of Coral videos, so we also wanted to include the “streets of England”as the setting for our products. Student Surveys
Once we had completed our video we posted it on YouTube and collected the comments that people left on the page. We also set up a feedback survey on Survey Monkey. These websites allowed us to receive feedback on our video from a wide range of people all over the internet. Feedback
Many people thought our video was “very funny and different”and a “nice happy video”. This is reassuring as it means our video has successfully captured the easy going, light hearted attitude that we were aiming for. This clearly appealed to many viewers as most people’s favourite part was “where everyone was dancing and having fun”. Feedback
There are a few ways in which our audience suggests we could improve our video, most of which are small details such as having “more, shorter frames” or other issues with the editing. Some of these criticisms would be useful, were we to have another go at the project, but a lot of the comments were down to personal interest, and we were unlikely to create a video that was to everyone’s tastes. Feedback
Overall we received some very positive feedback, with our Survey Monkey responses leaving a mark for the video of 7 out of 10 or above. Most people agreed that our video was funny and enjoyed watching our quirky characters having harmless fun with a positive, care free attitude. This links back to our initial audience feedback which enjoyed The Coral’s individual and slightly odd style. Summary
A lot of the responses came from people who knew us, which means that our feedback is slightly biased as they want to praise us for our efforts regardless of whether they liked the video. However they did leave some constructive criticism with acknowledgement of the resources we had at hand. Unfortunately The Coral doesn’t have particularly large fan bases on the internet as other, mainstream music acts, which could have been useful for our research. Limitations
