3.2 What are Vertebrates
vocabulary
1. vertebrates: an animal with a backbone

2. Mammal: a type of vertebrate that has hair or fur.

3. Bird: a type of vertebrate that has feathers

4. Amphibian: a type of vertebrate that has moist skin.

5. Fish: a type of vertebrate that breathe through gills.
Vertebrates
Most vertebrates have large brains and sharp
senses. These traits help the vertebrates survive.

                            Toucans are birds that
                            have feather and lay
                            eggs

             Monkeys, are mammals. They have
             fur and the mother make
             milk for their young
Scientist classify vertebrates into groups. The
five major groups are:
1. Mammals
2. Birds
3. Reptiles Scaly fish it
                                                 spend the entire
                      Tree frog started its life
4. Amphibians as an egg in water. But life in water
                      now it lives on land
5. fish now.
Mammals
• Have hair or fur
• Use lungs to breathe
• Drink milk made by their mother
• Give birth to live young Tiger. Has fur and
                                          make milk for its
                                          young.

                                            Kangaroo, carry
Pigs, aren´t furry, but their young in a
                they do have hair. pouch
Birds
• Have feathers
• Beaks
• Lungs
• Two legs
• Hatching from eggs
These birds look different, but they
all are vertebrates with 2 legs,
                                 Feathers, wings and beaks
Reptiles
• Have dry skin covered with scales
• Breathe with their lungs Sea turtle, lives in the water
• Spend a lot of time under water But it lays its egg on land
• Hatch from eggs laid on land
           Alligator, breathe with
           lungs.
It is often in water but
must have Iguana, hatched from an egg that
air to get the oxygen it Was laid on land.
           need.
Amphibians
• Have moist skin
• Lay eggs in water
• Develop lungs and legs

                            Salamander´s speed and colors
                            Help it survive
Fish
• Have gills
• Live in water
• Have scales and fins to help them swim

                                  All fish look different
                                  but they all have scales
and gills, and live in water
