Plain Tales for the British Empire: images of British India,
Africa and South East- Asia by Charles Allen, Ed.
Plain Tales from the British Empire gathers together Charles Allen’s best
loved books: Plain Tales from the Raj, Tales from the South China Seas
and Tales from the Dark Continent. They are first hand recollections from
taped reminiscences broadcast by BBC. At the start of the Second World
War, British empire was the most extensive the world have ever known,
with approximately a quarter of the world’s population under its sway.
Within three decades that empire had been almost totally dismembered. As
newly decolonized countries set out to recover their national identities or to
construct new ones, beginning with Indian and Pakistan in 1947, it was
inevitable that those who had been associated with colonial rule took on
the role of scapegoats, to be vilified as oppressors or mocked as stock
figures of fun. The book challenges these simplistic attitudes – not by
glorifying or mythologizing the Raj but by humanizing the colonial
experience. British rule was made up of many constituent parts, some
negative and damaging, others positive and beneficial. It was a self serving
exercise in throwing national weight about, but it was also about people
and the gambles they took with their lives, their interaction with other
cultures and its results that continues to affect both sides to this day. The
book gives an evocative and unique glimpse into the lost days of the
Empire across India, Africa and the territories fringing the South China
Sea. It is a highly valuable record of colonial life in the east. The content is
intimate, vivid and immensely enjoyable'. London, Abacus, 2009.
