Sir Arthur Evans was born in Nash Mills, England in 1851 He died at 90 years old in 1941 Friend of Heinrich Schliemann fellow archaeologist He was an archaeologist who discovered the Minoans of Crete (1600-1400bce), one of early advanced civilizations before Athens Why are these things always chipped ?
3. How did he become an archaeologist? Evan’s Dad owned a paper mill which would later fund his expeditions. Attended Oxford’s Brasenose College Appointed curator at the Ashmolean Museum of Antiquities, Oxford Set out to improve museum’s reputation Inspired by Cretan “seal stones” and coin gifts to museum
4. Why Crete? An unsuccessful dig in area gave him some clues on where to excavate Locals kept finding artifacts there Myths like the Minotaur took place on Crete and say there was some civilization there Schliemann believed there was possibly an ancient empire buried there, except he died before he started excavation That’s Crete
5. What did he find? In 1899, he excavated the Palace of Knossos and named the people Minoans after the mythical King Minos The excavations uncovered complicated corridors, pottery and frescoes Artifacts showed a very civilized people with running water and a class system Clay tablets with writing called Linear A and Linear B The reconstruction of the Palace began in 1903 briefly interrupted by WWI and continued until 1931 Unfortunately Evan’s reconstructed buildings were not historically accurate but realistic
6. Later Life Sir Arthur Evans was knighted in 1911 for his discoveries After many years of excavations and reconstructing Knossos, Evans retired in 1931 and died 10 years later in Boar’s Hill, England Retirement
