Conference: Open Repository, Indianapolis, 8-12 June 2015 Presenters: Andrea Bollini, Michele Mennielli Cineca, Italy We would like to share with the DSpace Community some useful tips, starting from how to embed DSpace into a larger IT ecosystem that can provide additional value to the information managed. We will then show how publication data in DSpace - enriched with a proper use of the authority framework - can be combined with information coming from the HR system. Thanks to this, the system can provide rich and detailed reports and analysis through a business intelligence solution based on the Pentaho’s Mondrian OLAP open source data integration tools. We will also present other use cases related to the management of publication information for reporting purpose: publication record has an extended lifecycle compared to the one in a basic IR; system load is much bigger, especially in writing, since the researchers need to be able to make changes to enrich data when new requirements come from the government or the university researcher office; data quality requires the ability to make distributed changes to the publication also after the conclusion of a validation workflow. Finally we intend to present our direct experience and the challenges we faced to make DSpace easily and rapidly deployable to more than 60 sites.

The goal was to increase awareness of why a Semantic Web-compliant standard was needed for describing data, where current standards fall short, and how this new emerging standard that extends prior efforts can aid data discovery and integration. The one-covers-all approach in current metadata standards for scientific data has serious limitations in keeping up with the ever-growing data. This paper reports the findings from a survey to metadata standards in the scientific data domain and argues for the need for a metadata infrastructure. The survey collected 4400+ unique elements from 16 standards and categorized these elements into 9 categories. Findings from the data included that the highest counts of element occurred in the descriptive category and many of them overlapped with DC elements. This pattern also repeated in the elements co-occurred in different standards. A small number of semantically general elements appeared across the largest numbers of standards while the rest of the element co-occurrences formed a long tail with a wide range of specific semantics. The paper discussed implications of the findings in the context of metadata portability and infrastructure and pointed out that large, complex standards and widely varied naming practices are the major hurdles for building a metadata infrastructure.

This work describes the application of semantic wikis in distant learning for Semantic Web courses. The resulting system focuses its application of existing and new wiki technology in making a wiki-based interface that demonstrates Semantic Web features. A new layer of wiki technology, called “OWL Wiki Forms” is introduced for this Semantic Web functionality in the wiki interface. This new functionality includes a form-based interface for editing Semantic Web ontologies. The wiki then includes appropriate data from these ontologies to extend existing wiki RDF export. It also includes ontology-driven creation of data entry and browsing interfaces for the wiki itself. As a wiki, the system provides the student an educational tool that students can use anywhere while still sharing access with the instructor and, optionally, other students.
