British army was supposed to be neutral,

• Arrested many Catholics suspected of terrorism
1972: 15,000 Catholics had a non-violent
protest against the British government
The British army opened fire…
The events in 1972 were known as
Bloody Sunday
• 13 dead and hundreds wounded
Catholics lost faith in the British army
Catholics turned to the IRA to free them
from the British
