5. A Wise Man Once Said:
"If you want to know how we practiced medicine 5 years ago,
read a textbook.
If you want to know how we practiced medicine 2 years ago,
read a journal.
If you want to know how we practice medicine now,
go to a conference.
If you want to know how we will practice medicine in the future,
listen in the hallways and use FOAM."
- Prof. Joe Lex

persona are one.
14. Step #1: Join Twitter
• Register at Twitter.com
• To get the most out of Twitter, install the App on
your mobile devices. Set up notifications via
Settings.
• Follow users and hashtags (#)
• No, you DO NOT have to contribute
• It is OK to watch
• Check the feed when you can and follow links or
conversations that appeal to you
15. Hashtags - #
• The # sign is used to unify threads on Twitter
• Many established hashtags, new ones come up every
day.
• # often used to identify conferences (#SMACC2013,
SAEM13). By searching for a conference hashtag you
can follow proceedings and contribute from afar.
• Your starting points:
• #FOAMed , #EMTOT
18. Step #2: Read Blogs
• Independently published, freely accessible, medical
education.
• Your starting points:
• Academic Life in Emergency Medicine
• Life in the Fast Lane

EM collected by Joe Lex at al)
• EMRAP EE (Rob Rogers, Mel Herbert,Amal Mattu)

Dawson)

FOAM resources (previously EMGoogle.com)
• Use your apps...

of good stuff.
27. Step #6: Essential Apps
• QXMD Read
• A news feeder similar to Pulse, but based on
academic journals.
• Not FOAM, relies on access to journals. But if your
hospital/school subscribes to the journals, full text is
easily accessible, many with PDF's.
• Install, enter your specialty and journals of interest,
and you'll never be out of something to read.
• Advanced users: proxy servers can be set up
