SHOT BY SHOT
ANALYSIS OF TWILIGHT
Lauren Mills
OPENING
 Commence with dialogue for an introduction of what the film is about which creates
the sense of seriousness and significance.
 Background music behind the dialogue tenders the audience into listening and
understanding what speaker is saying.
 Establishing shot. Forestry surroundings suggest the film is set in a rural area.
 The vivid green colour suggests emerald and magical surroundings.
 Denotes a vulnerable deer in the dark forestry surrounding. Connotes it is in danger.
 First humanly instinct is that the deer is prey, this prepares the viewer for a possible chase.
 The deer may also be seen as a magical/symbolic creature suggesting the theme of the film.
 POV (point of view) shot through eyes of an onlooker. Creates the sense of
suspicion as to what will happen.
 Non-diegetic music consisting of violin strings which creates an eerie atmosphere.
 Diegetic sound of birds and ‘croaks’ in the background.
 The blurred leaves close to the camera suggests that the onlooker is hiding and
staying out of sight from the deer (prey)
 Tilt shot to show the surroundings.
 Faster camera movement which suggests action will commence.
 Music matches the shot. When the camera drops down to introduce the action, the
music gains momentum.
 POV shot through the ‘runners’ eyes heading towards the prey. This is shown from
the blurred leaves.
 Immediate thought is that this is another animal (predator) hunting the deer.
 Handy cam is used to show that the ‘runner’ is running towards the deer (before this
shot) and that this is not a steady, calm movement but a more aggressive approach.
 This shot denotes the deer running away with a human figure chasing or running alongside it.
 The fact that the person is slightly in front of the deer suggests that they have inhuman powers.
 The fact that the person is hunting the deer connotes mystery and suspicion it is not normal human
behaviour to use running as the skill and supposedly catch the deer.
 The colours remain green and emerald which keeps to mood the same. There is no real sense of
horror or danger. The mood remains mellow and mysterious.
 There is still diegetic sound of the trees as the deer and the person run through. There are bird
sounds which are more like ‘squawks’ which enliven the chase a little but keeps the sense of secrecy
and fantasy.
 The non-diegetic music picks up and makes the sequence more tense, however there are still
sounds that tone the chase down which makes the action seem less terrifying
 This is a point of view shot from the deer running through the forest whilst being chased by the
human figure. This is shown again by the blurred vegetation.
 The colours are dark and represent the deer being in a lonely position as it is being chased on it’s
own with no help. These colours also connote that the surroundings are dangerous and unfriendly
opposed to the lighting being bright which would suggest more of a safe place.
 There is still diegetic sounds of the deer running away along with the non – diegetic music that
creates more of an intense theme.
 This is a low angle shot which reveals what is chasing the deer and confirms that it is a
human (supposedly). This is a magical and mysterious feature as it is not normal for this to
happen. This is a good opening for the film as it gives a hint at what the film is about but
leaves unanswered questions which make the viewer want to continue watching.
 The lighting here fades out into black and white which is good for showing the change
in scene. It also suggests that this is a movement from the future to the present (vice versa)
or potentially a flash back for someone.
 This shot then totally fades into a white screen and introduces a totally different
scene.
 The same music is played in the background and there is a sharp piece when the deer
is caught to emphasise the catch.
 This is what the previous shot fades into. This is a contrast shot to the previous ones as it is a
completely different colour which connotes a much safer and happier atmosphere.
 It is a shot of the sky which matches the previous tilt shot to show surroundings. The blue sky
indicates summer and heat.
 It also shows the glare from the sun in the top left hand corner of the shot which again
suggests that this is a completely different place.
 The dialogue commences again from the girl, continuing from what she was previously saying
in the shots before.
 This is what follows the tilt shot and reveals who is speaking.
 The colours are bright which shows safety.
 This is the first character that is introduced to the audience, therefore straight away
this means that she is a main part in the film.
 The dialogue continues as well as the same themed music that is played from the
beginning but with less excitement and action. This may suggest that the deer chase
relates to the girl.
 The props that she is holding are quite fierce which may suggest that she may use
them for defence.
 The set is full of these plants which shows she had dug one up. This may suggest that
she is taking one away as a souvenir.
 The camera zooms in on the characters face while she is speaking. This signifies
importance of the character (long time filming her before cutting)
 The age of her immediately suggests that the film is aimed at the younger
generations. (14-20)
 She is also pretty and innocent looking which suggests something may happen to her
or that she might be in danger.
