3. Case Study – Copper/ Gold Mine, Horn of Africa
TSX listed junior miner with its’ main
project in the Horn of Africa
The executive board were looking for a
way of providing 20MW uninterruptable
power for the mine on OpEx not CAPEx.
An Evaluation was made between diesel
and HFO which resulted in a decision to
rent a diesel plant for an initial period of
2 years.
The contract was extended to 10 years once the rental model had been
proven.
MCD assisted in the evaluation and decision making process with the
clients’ EPCM contractor
The decision to rent a mobile plant has saved the client in excess of $100m
over the life of the mine.
4. MCD lead the mine tendered for
a new power plant, a fuel
storage facility and fuel supply
contract.
EPCM of 5MW HFO power
plant and 460,00L fuel storage
facility
Annual Savings estimated at
~$2.5m.
Case Study –Tanzania
London listed emerging gold producer in Tanzania.
Their flagship project, has been producing gold since 2012.
The back of mine cost , mainly from fuel cost for the diesel fired power
plant was creating barriers to development of the mine.
MCD carried out a high level economic and technical study of the current
power plant and to recommend a new solution that would save around 30%
of the fuel cost.
5. Case Study – Tanzania
In addition a Solar PV test farm has been added to the mini grid operating at
the mine.
The initial cost of power was $0.43/ kWh
With the change to heavy fuel oil this drops to $0.33 cents
By further introducing the Solar PV farm the cost during daylight hours drops
by an additional $0.03-0.04 per KWh.
