Libraries have found that users are willing to have quite long conversations by textFrontLineSMS - [http://www.frontlinesms.com/ FrontlineSMS] is free open source software that turns a laptop and a mobile phone into a central communications hub. Once installed, the program enables users to send and receive text messages with large groups of people through mobile phones. During the recent M-Libraries conference, Ken Banks (the founder of FrontLineSMS) showed some intriguing examples of how it has been used in the field. On a particular occasion, the software was used by the British army in Afghanistan to alert its staff about a major security incident, and as a result of this in time communication through FrontLineSMS, all the staff returned back to the based safely.
Currently Elsevier find that smaller screens are mostly used for discovery, but tablets are used for reading. However, we’ve already seen behaviours change and as more text becomes available in reflowable content consumers may start to read more full text on small screens.
JISC funded community support project to address issues around lack of evidence base for m-libraries and to develop stronger community linksEvidence gathering included blog, case studies, collating existing web resources, and pathways to best practice guidesCommunity building included information sharing event, presentations, community website, social media discussions and mailing listPlease join in discussions by signing up to mailing list, subscribing to blog, and joining in conversations on social media (e.g. #mlibs on Twitter)
